I've heard variations on this theme -- for example, if you generally approve of one party's platform over the other, then you should vote for the party rather than the candidate -- or in spite of the candidate (see, for example, Bruno's inability to cut bait with Joe Lieberman).
So rather than a full-fledged third way, I'd be happy with a simple two-over-two paradigm, where 5% of loonies on both ends of the spectrum spin off their own impotent political movements, allowing the 90% of the middle duke it out over the real spuzz.
Liberalism in general has a lot to gain by thinking about how to win decisively in the West.
