Once elected, the mandate of the party that formed the government was for a maximum of five years from the day it was elected.
Since the party forming the government in a minority situation has fewer seats than the combined opposition parties, the government can be defeated on a vote of no confidence.
However, the Government of Canada adopted fixed election dates on May 3, 2007, with the first general election to be held under this systm set for Monday, October 19 2009, with subsequent elections set for the third Monday in October, four calendar years in the future.

No party should have an all or nothing policy on abortion, gay marriage, etc. as it, by definition, limits an open discussion of the issue and often puts a candidate in an unnecessary conflict with his or her party.
The Green Party's is decidedly not politics as usual, but rather taking many issues seriously that have been skirted or ignored by all the mainstream parties, and as such the Green Party is neither to the left or right but to the innovative side of all parties.

Stephen Harper changed the party and influenced the ideologies from the Canadian alliance to the current conservative party.
The most appealing feature of the liberal party in my opinion is their concern for the environment.
All the other parties seem to have policies that I disagree with such as the liberal parties spending of the taxpayer’s money, or the bloc Quebecois’ views on separating the country.
