Atomic theory - Psychology Central   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Arguably, the atomic theory is one of the most important theories in the history of science, with wide-ranging implications for both pure and applied science.
The greatest extant treatise on atomic theory and its implications for religion, human life, the existence of the soul, and death, is De Rerum Natura ("On the Nature of Things"), written in the 1st century BC by Lucretius Carus.
Ernest Rutherford was a major contributor to the atomic model because he proved that although Dalton and Thompson were partially correct there was still a flaw in both of their models of the atom in that the atom consisted mostly of space.

 werner heisenberg
Werner Karl Heisenberg (December 5, 1901 - February 1, 1976) was a celebrated physicist and Nobel laureate, one of the founders of quantum mechanics.
He invented matrix mechanics, the first formalization of quantum mechanics in 1925.
He received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1932 "for the creation of quantum mechanics, the application of which has, inter alia, led to the discovery of the allotropic forms of hydrogen".

 (Q-7)   Wave Mechanics
That was the basic idea of what was called "wave mechanics"--meaning, not the mechanics of waves, but a re-formulation, in terms of waves, of the branch of physics known as mechanics, which deals with motions of matter.
Wave mechanics asserts that when one gets down to the atomic level, particles sometimes need to be treated as waves, spread out in space, their location and momentum not known until they interact.
Nowadays the basic modes of atomic (or molecular) wave functions are often known as orbitals, patterns of regions in which the wave function is concentrated.

In 1957, at age 31, Lee and Chen Ning Yang jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on the violation of parity law, which Chien-Shiung Wu experimentally verified.
Soon after the establishment of relations with the PRC, Lee and his wife, Hui-Chun Jeannette Chin (秦惠莙 Qín Huìjùn), were able to go to China, where Lee gave a series of lectures and seminars, and organized the China-U.S. Physics Examination and Application (CUSPEA).
