 Weston Clevedon & Portishead Railway: History
An Act of Parliament to authorise the construction of the railway was passed in Aug 1885, but due to various legal and financial problems, the time limit of the Act expired and further Acts had to be passed in July 1890 and Dec 1891.
The finances of the railway became serious by 1905, and it entered receivership in 1909, and was in decline up to the outbreak of World War II, not helped by the increase in road traffic.
The GWR purchased the railway (but not the land) to use it for storage, and for a short time up to 200 coal wagons were stored on the line.

One of the first railway lines in the Middle East was built between Tehran and Rayy in Iran.

 Surrey Iron Railway
The original plan, first mooted in 1799 had, in fact, been for a canal, but to take the necessary water from the streams in the area would have deprived the many water-powered mills and factories.
This, then, was the world's first railway to be public ly subscribed by Act of Parliament, as a railway throughout.
The route, however, was reopened in 1855 by the Wimbledon & Croydon Railway, which was later absorbed by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.

This was the oldest constituent of the Dominion Atlantic Railway.
One of the conditions of Confederation was the building of a railway by the newly constituted Dominion Government to connect Halifax with the St. Lawrence at or near Quebec.
The railway lay idle from late 1910 until July 25, 1911 when it was bought by the Canadian Northern Railway as part of its new Montreal to Ottawa line.

The line was subsequently extended through Purley and Coulsdon to serve quarries near Godstone and Merstham (known as the Croydon Merstham and Godstone Railway: opened 1805, closed 1838).
The advent of faster and more powerful steam locomotives spelled the end for horse-drawn railways, and the SIR closed in 1846.
Part of Jessop's route, however, was retained for use by the London and Brighton Railway and remains in use, and much of the SIR is now followed by the Wimbledon line of Croydon Tramlink.

Like other forms of public transport, many railways are having to make considerable investment in order to meet new requirements for security in the face of recent terrorism incidents, for instance the Madrid train bombings of 11 March 2004.
However, in hilly terrain and mountains, to avoid large slopes, the railway is at some places elevated, on an embankment or bridge / viaduct, and at some places in a cutting (ditch / trench) or tunnel.

 U. S. Postal History Timeline
Although funds were appropriated a month before he left office in 1893, subsequent Postmasters General dragged their feet on inaugurating the new service so that it was 1896 before the first experimental rural delivery routes began in West Virginia, with carriers working out of post offices in Charlestown, Halltown, and Uvilla.
Many transportation events in postal history were marked by great demonstrations: the Pony Express for example, and scheduled airmail service in 1918.
History proved differently, but this experiment with missile mail exemplifies the pioneering spirit of the Post Office Department when it came to developing faster, better ways of moving the mail.

San Diego's Electric Rapid Transit Company introduces the first electric street railway system in the western U.S., running from D Street downtown to Old Town along Arctic Street (now Kettner).
The San Diego Cable Railway, which had been incorporated on July 22, 1889, took over the franchise of an unsuccessful electric line.
The railway never achieves commercial success, automobiles and trucks providing competition; it is eventually washed out by a flash flood and abandoned in 1976.

The John Bull, the oldest complete and operable locomotive in the world, was instrumental in opening the railway age in the United States.
Shipped disassembled from Newcastle, England, to Philadelphia in 1831, it was put together at Bordentown, New Jersery, in just ten days by a mechanic named Isaac Dripps who had never before seen a locomotive.
Since 1885 it has belonged to the Smithsonian Institution, and today is one of the prime artifacts on display in the National Museum of American History.

 Washington, D.C. Chapter NRHS (National Railway Historical Society)
The East Washington was the vestigal remnant of the old Chesapeake Beach Railway which gave up the ghost on April 15, 1935.
The East Washington survived for another 40 years or so on a slim diet of a liquor company needing deliveries by rail and mostly delivering coal by rail to the local power company from the place locally as known Chesapeake Jct, the interchange with the B&O near the intersection of Deane Ave.
There is an excellent hardback book out on the whole subject of the Chesapeake Beach and the East-Washington Railway by Ames Williams and is currently available NEW for $20 or so and is available from the Chesapeake Beach Rwy Museum in Chesapeake Beach, MD.
