Theodore Roosevelt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Scrooge McDuck comics by Keno Don Rosa, Roosevelt appears several times, often as the mentor of an adolescent Scrooge, teaching him the values of self-confidence and self-reliance.
He was an unusually eloquent conversationalist who, throughout his life, sought out the company of the smartest men and women.
He was a widely respected historian, naturalist and explorer of the Amazon Basin; his 35 books, listed online [1], include works on outdoor life, natural history, U.S. Western and political history, an autobiography and a host of other topics.

Scrooge McDuck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scrooge first hints that he was not born into wealth, as he remembers buying the Hourglass of the story in Morocco when he was a member of a ship's crew as a cabin boy.
Scrooge is the richest duck in the world, rivaled by Flintheart Glomgold, John D. Rockerduck and, less prominent, the maharaja of the fictional country Howdoyoustan, having worked his way up the financial ladder from humble immigrant roots.
Scrooge privately admitted to his nephews that he had used an army of "cutthroats" to get the tribe to abandon their lands, in order to establish a diamond-mining colony.

The Life and Times of Michael K - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It tells of a hare-lipped, simple gardener, Michael K, trying to run away from the South African war during the apartheid era.
Some commentators notice a connection between the character Michael K and the protagonist Josef K. in The Trial by Franz Kafka.
The book itself fetched a Booker Prize in 1983, the year it was published.

Guardian Unlimited Books Authors Coetzee, JM
Life and Times of Michael K is classic, no-word-wasted Coetzee; In the Heart of the Country reads like a female Beckett monologue (that's a compliment).
He is critically revered (though some found his memoir, Boyhood, too emotionally disengaged), especially for Life and Times of Michael K, which won the Booker Prize in 1983.
Boyhood: Scenes from Provincial Life is his memoir of childhood, combining domestic detail with the personal realisation that something was rotten in the fabric of Afrikaans society.

Review On Life And Times Of Michael K - J M Coetzee by suyog -- MouthShut.com
Michael K doesn’t understand much of this world – rather he is one of the stupidest persons to come upon on earth; yet in Michael we see that a simple idea of life is worth living a life for.
The freedom to be free from the soul; that a free life in a bonded society is probably not worth it; that a man bonded in his soul is not quite free.
Michael teaches us that by removing ourselves from the complexities of life and looking at the bare simplistic demands of life, what one yearns for is freedom.

 Books of The Times
Not merely stabbing is the irony that Michael K - trying to survive by raising pumpkins and living in a hole in the ground on an abandoned farm - is assumed to be part of a mountain guerilla force and is tortured for information.
Because he was slow-witted and disfigured by a hair lip, Michael K as a child was committed to a state institution and trained to be a gardener, ''grade 3(b),'' for the city of Cape Town, where he now worked in solitary contentment.
There is, to begin with, the novel's heavy debt to Franz Kafka- not only the references to ''K'' and even once to a telephone call placed to ''the Castle,'' but also the insistent comparisons of Michael K to various insects, and his gradual mastery of the role of hunger artist.

LIFE & TIMES OF MICHAEL K : J.M. what a pity that to live in times like these a man must be ready to live like a beast.
because enough men had gone off to war saying the time for gardening was when the war was over; whereas there must be men to stay behind and keep gradening alive, or at least the idea of gardening; because once the cord was broken, the earth would grow hard and forget her children.

Life and Times of Michael K A Novel by J. M. Coetzee
Disgrace was not exactly a happy book, but there was a complexity in it that I somehow miss in Life & Times.
Michael K is a simple gardner from a class and a situation where to be simple is not to be protected, but to be unnecessary and even guilty.
What is interesting about Michael and what is also one of the organising aspects of the book is that Michael does not stay in passive opposition to his situation but gradually moves to a kind of active opposition-- at least as active as such a limited character with limited power is capable of carrying out.

But following upon the exultation would sometimes come a sense of pain that was obscurely connected with the future; and then it was only brisk work that could keep him from lapsing into gloominess.
K removed his sacks from the kitchen to one of the rooms on the hillside and yeilded the house to the new Visagie.
That same evening, when K had made a fire up on the hillside and was broiling a pair of bushdoves for his supper, the grandson appeared out of the dusk and hung around so long that K felt obliged to offer him a share.

It appears that the spelling of "Shasta" was adopted as a spelling for present Mt. Shasta at the same time that the spelling was adopted for the County.
The Argüello 1821 diary, translated and published for the first time in 1992, adds details that the "Twins" were of equal form and height and nearly joined, and that they had been visited by the Scotsman John Anthony Gilroy some time before 1821.
At about the same time the eminent Mt. Shasta botanist William Bridge Cooke completed and published the first of his four-part Flora of Mt. Shasta, a work which the late Dr. Cooke had planned to compile as a one volume work.

In "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" (and all his other Duck work), Don Rosa fully delineates Barks' universe, bringing to it a dynamic, modern-day sensibility without losing a whit of characterization or credibility.
