Timex Sinclair 1000 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Timex Sinclair 1000 (TS1000) was the first computer produced by Timex Sinclair, a joint-venture between Timex Corporation and Sinclair Research.
The TS1000 was a slightly modified Sinclair ZX81 with an NTSC RF modulator instead of a UK PAL device and the onboard RAM doubled to two kilobytes.
It was followed by an improved version, the Timex Sinclair 1500.

The Timex Sinclair 1000 is the North American version of the Sinclair ZX-81, from British based Sinclair Research Ltd. They are nearly identical, except for the name on the front, and minor motherboard layout differences.
The first Sinclair computer was the ZX-80, released in 1980 for $200.00.
Unfortunately, it is also their last system, as Timex dropped out of the computer market a few months later in the Spring of 1984.

Although Sinclair did sell the ZX81 and Spectrum though mail order in the USA for a time, the Sinclair machines' biggest American success came about through the company's collaboration with Timex.
Sinclair was doing well in the States - by June 1981 it was selling 18,000-20,000 ZX81s a month, more than the combined unit sales of Tandy, Apple and Commodore.
The Timex saga came to an unhappy end in late 1983 when Timex, burdened with huge losses and a series of costly failures of its products, pulled out of the home computer market and dropped its tie-in with Sinclair.

The Timex stand was enormous, about the area of four-room flat, and it was dominated by giant pictures of the T/S 2000 and the T/S 1500.
He also stated that "the T/S 1000, T/S 1500 and T/S 2000 series colour computers, with the growing line of Timex peripherals and software, constitute the best price/value family of computing products available today." While some may argue with that, there seems little doubt that the Timex versions of Sinclair computers are pretty impressive.
Although the 100 or so software packs which Timex have made available in the US for the T/S 1000 and T/S 1500 are of interest (with most of the good items of software being written in Britain), the instant-load plug-in cartridges Timex are offering for the machines are really exciting.

The Timex Sinclair 1000 (TS1000) was the result of a joint effort between British company Sinclair Research and Timex Corporation in an effort to gain an entry into the rapidly-growing early 1980s home computer market in the United States.
It was a slightly modified Sinclair ZX81 with an NTSC RF modulator instead of a UK PAL device and the onboard RAM doubled to two kilobytes.
Later, Timex developed two enhanced versions of the ZX Spectrum for the U.S. market, the TS2048 and TS2068.

Planet Sinclair: Computers: Timex/Sinclair: TS 1000
With the TS 1000, the first transatlantic Sinclair computer, Timex hoped to repeat the huge success of Sinclair Research in the UK.
The TS 1000 was immediately successful, with over 550,000 sold in the six months from its launch in July 1982.
However, the familiar Sinclair quality control gremlins struck the TS 1000 - some estimates suggested that as many as one in three machines shipped were faulty.

Sinclair also released a discharge-type printer (it requires metallized thermal paper, and isn't easy to resupply in this day and age), and third parties released various other peripherals.
For some time, Sinclair had sold the ZX81 in the US via mail-order (ZX81 units sold in the US are labeled slightly differently from the UK edition).
However, when Sinclair subcontracted their manufacturing to Timex in 1982, the US market "domestic" version of the machine became the Timex-badged TS1000.

However, the ZX printer which Sinclair had developed could not pass the requirements of the Federal Communications Commission (it put off radio signals which caused radio and TV interference), so Timex contacted Alphacom to produce a printer which would be small, compatible, and the same price as the announced ZX printer.
Timex decided, however, to improve upon the Spectrum, and delayed the format introduction.
Sinclair said that it had no intention of marketing any of the Timex line, although they were getting ready to introduce the QL here.
