Temiskaming & District VCARS is a non-profit, community based program that provides immediate crisis assistance though by specially trained community volunteers who are on-call to area police and emergency services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In 1989, an independent evaluation of the VCARS projects concluded that victims, police officers, community agencies and volunteers themselves were in agreement that the provision of immediate assistance and timely appropriate referral did help to reduce trauma and enhance recovery from the effects of victimization.
Temiskaming & District VCARS services the District north to Butler Lake, south to Temagami, east to the Quebec border and west to Gowganda; a 15 803 square mile catchment area.

On 9 August 1853, a Schedule of the distribution of lands under the 1851 Statute was recommended by the Executive Council of the Province of Canada and approved by Order of the Governor-General, Lord Elgin.
This was the creation of the Timiskaming First Nation along the shores of Lake Temiscamingue.
In 1889, Charles Cobbold Farr left his employment as the last chief trader at Fort Temiscamingue with the Hudson Bay Company and moved his family to a clearing along the shore of Lake Temiskaming known as Humphrey’s Depot, to establish one of the first non-native settlements.

Timiskaming (also known as Timiskaming—French River) was a federal electoral district in the northeastern part of Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1917 to 1925, and from 1935 to 1997.
In 1933, the two ridings were re-united, and the new Timiskaming riding consisted of the territorial district of Timiskaming (excluding the township of Keefer and all townships east of Keefer and adjacent to the north boundary of Timiskaming district); and part of the territorial district of Nipissing.
In 1976, it was redefined to consist of the southeastern part of the Territorial District of Cochrane, the northern part of the Territorial District of Nipissing; and the Territorial District of Timiskaming (excluding that part lying westerly of the Townships of Cleaver and Fallon).

KidSportTM Timiskaming is a children's charitable program, which helps children and youth in need overcome social and economic barriers preventing or limiting their participation in organized recreational activities.
In 2005 KidSport™ Timiskaming assisted over 246 children and youth in the district to participate in an organized recreational activity of their choice, with the required equipment.
The KidSport™ Timiskaming fund was able to assist over 70 children and youth in the fall 2005 registration period, 50 of these children being residence of South Temiskaming and Cobalt.

Hello birders we had the years first white breasted nuthatch appear at the feeder on the 18th and it sounds like many are seeing white breasted nuthatches now in the area after being absent with their redbreasted cousins all winter.
Bird numbers vary across Timiskaming but the trend is that pine grosbeaks are in decline as well as snow bunting and common redpolls.

In 1912 a Proclamation declared Haileybury as the District Seat in the newly formed District of Temiskaming.
This announcement gave rise to such structures as the Court House, Lands Titles Registry Office, and District Jail.
All of the original buildings were destroyed in the Great Fire of 1922 but were rebuilt shortly afterwards.

Minister of Northern Development and Mines Tim Hudak today presented a $213,000 cheque to the Timiskaming DSSAB for exceeding last year’s workfare placement target.
This additional funding must be used for local services such as helping those on welfare, providing assistance to vulnerable children, supporting the homeless, or child care.
The Timiskaming DSSAB created 293 placements last year, surpassing its target by 213 placements.
