Timor (car) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Timor was a car sold in Indonesia in the mid-1990s, which was simply a rebadged version of the South Korean Kia Sephia.
The choice of Timor as the name of the Indonesian 'national car' was also unfortunate having negative connotations with East Timor, which Indonesia had annexed in 1976, although the name was not used overseas.
With the Asian financial crisis in 1997 came the collapse of Kia, and the demise of the Suharto regime in 1998, which saw the Timor car project abandoned.

Guterres, who was named by an independent Indonesian investigation as implicated in the widespread violence that engulfed East Timor in the wake of the August 30 ballot, had previously used the car for himself.
Guterres borrowed the car from the office of the Indonesian Forestry and Plantations Ministry in the East Timor capital, Dili, and used it to campaign for the pro-Indonesia side in the lead-up to the August 30 ballot, Dana said.
Although he was previously a prominent member of the Golkar Party in East Timor, Guterres reportedly wants to join PDIP because Megawati urged the East Timorese to vote to stay with Indonesia in the ballot where almost 80 per cent of the East Timor population opted to separate.

TWO-WAY RADIO conversations intercepted by foreign observers in East Timor in the days around the self-determination vote of 30 August reveal the part played by the special forces unit of the Indonesian army - the Kopassus - in the terror unleashed in the territory by the anti- independence militia.
The tapes, collected and transcribed by workers with the International Federation for East Timor (Ifet), an organisation that sent observers to monitor the vote, also expose how its personnel, as well as East Timorese civilians, were identified by Kopassus as targets for militia violence.

Sales of passenger cars by PT TPN after 30 June 1997 have continued to benefit from those subsidies and, as a result, to cause serious prejudice to the interests of the European Communities.
Thus, the number of Timors S-515 imported from Korea and not yet sold as of 30 June 1997 would have been sufficient to cover almost 70 per cent of the total Indonesian demand for passenger cars during the whole of 1996.
In comparison, the forecast demand for passenger cars during 1998 and 1999 is 64,000 and 72,000, respectively.
