Adm. Timothy Keating, commander of North American Aerospace and Defense Command at Northern Command, said his division must use available commercial technology as well as advanced devices that incorporate nanotechnology, satellite imagery and detection technology for its various missions.
Keating said Northern Command has "very few assigned resources" but can employ tools from other agencies, such as satellite imagery, bomb-detection dogs, the Coast Guard's fleet or Federal Emergency Management Agency resources.
The troops of Northern Command, which was established after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to defend the country against another tragedy, can only be deployed by the Defense secretary and works with other federal, state and local agencies during an emergency.

 U.S. Pacific Fleet aids Thailand flood victims
Timothy J. Keating, Battle Force Seventh Fleet commander, on behalf of the U.S. Pacific Command, donated $25,000 of disaster relief supplies to aid flood victims in the Chanthaburi province of Thailand.
In a small ceremony held at the Sattahip Thai Royal Marine Base, Keating presented the materials to Rear Adm. Chet Komolthiti, Royal Thai Marine Corps deputy commander.
The flood, which killed five people and left 33,000 others without homes or with damaged property, occurred on Aug. 1, just prior to the Kitty Hawk Battle Group’s visit to Thailand.

 Army taps 4-star general for Iraq command -- The Washington Times
The nomination, which had been expected, was announced yesterday by the Pentagon along with several other major command assignments, including Navy Vice Adm. Timothy J. Keating to be commander of Northern Command, the military command that was created after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
As a four-star general in Iraq, Gen. Casey would be responsible for overseeing the U.S.-led military operation and interacting with the new Iraqi government that takes over June 30 as well as the U.S. ambassador in Baghdad, John Negroponte.
Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the Army vice chief of staff, has been nominated for a newly created post that would make him the top U.S. commander and only four-star general in Iraq.
