Tin House comes late to the return to the bellettrist journal movement Cotts says The Baffler, McSweeney’s, Open House and other small publications represent.
The only thing really new about Tin House is that there seems to be enough capital behind it to buy some public relations that raises it to a level where it dings the consciousness of a Cynthia Cotts.
Tin House is as "alternative" as the CDs in the alt-rock bin at the Virgin Megastore, and just as consciously crafted and "commercial[ly] design[ed]" to appeal to a certain market segment as Joe is, and Cotts must have a stupefyingly naive view of cultural production and consumption in today’s world to think otherwise.

US family defiant in tinfoil house | The Register
This one is causing some merriment on Slashdot at the moment: a Sacramento family has been ordered to remove aluminium cladding from their house which, they claim, is protecting them from radio wave attack by neighbours.
According to local news outfit KCRA, the D'Souzas say the assaults began on the first anniversary of 11 September, and have subsequently caused "health problems ranging from headaches to lupus".
Accordingly, they clad the exterior of the house with sheet aluminium which, as Sarah D'Souza expained, is "a shield to protect against radiation, because microwave radiation is reflected off of aluminium, so it's a protective measure."

Since Tin House publishes a magazine as well as books, we felt that we were already more engaged with the real world than most literary festivals that operate in the educational, tail-chasing ether.
For the Tin House festival, we purposefully created a nonhierarchical structure, where everyone stayed on the Reed campus, where all of the meals were communal, most everyone eating outdoors at picnic tables where students and faculty could easily mix.
For one week, Tin House created a bubble where everyone is nothing but a writer, where everyone is given the space – the permission – to be a writer.

Willamette Week Online | Books | REVIEW | CAST ON A HOT Tin House
Tin House magazine's first summer writers workshop was a success even without crowds.
In the latest issue of The Organ, novelist Matthew Stadler presents an excellent argument against the type of summer writing workshop that Tin House inaugurated last week at Reed College.
Stadler's case, inspired by Tin House's joining the swelling ranks of such enterprises, is persuasive: The money spent ($850 for one three-day class at Tin House's retreat) might be better spent hosting open symposia and parties where young hopefuls could informally meet with established writers rather than follow the tired-but-true workshop format.

The Book Babes: The Fiction Writer's Lottery, Part I
Over the past few years, Tin House has organized one of the zillion writers’ gatherings that now take place across the country, and this year the Tin House event attracted about 100 fulltime participants to my favorite town.
Even though Tin House commits to using at least one unpublished writer in every issue, greenhorns face even more audacious odds: maybe 1 in 1,000, Spillman conceded later—odds also suggested for aspiring novelists at a subsequent panel featuring four prominent book agents.
Another alert that was posted at the conference concerned the proliferation of writer's programs and what may be a backlash toward what Tin House editor Rob Spillman referred to as "MFA fiction." This is code for well-crafted stories that don't take you anywhere, in spite of their elegant word choices and perfect syntax.
