OSV - A New Roof For The Thompson Bank   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Tin plate was the standard material used by makers of tinware such as punched-tin lanterns and milk pans, but was not commonly used for roofing.
Early nineteenth-century tin roofs were constructed with tin sheets 10 x 14 inches in size joined to make a continuous, solid roof by folding, crimping, and soldering their edges together.
This "flat seam" roof design was common in the early and mid-nineteenth century but was later largely replaced by "standing seam" and "ribbed seam" roofs, which were easier to install and worked better with the larger sizes of sheet tin available later in the century.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Summary & Essays - Tennessee Williams
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tennessee Williams's third significant play (following The Glass Menagerie [1944] and A Streetcar Named Desire [1947]), was a huge commercial success, running for 694 performances on Broadway.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is rather loosely based on Williams's short story "Three Players of a Summer Game," a narrative that reveals the influence of D. Lawrence on the playwright's early work.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, however, has all of the earmarks of Williams's unique dramas, involving as it does his emotionally biographical themes of ambivalence in sexual orientation, disaffection, and difficulty in maintaining intimate relationships.
