Tinea capitis may be mistaken for alopecia areata, an autoimmune process, in patients with nonscarring alopecia on the scalp, but the latter is not associated with itching, scaling, and inflammation, which are common presenting signs of tinea capitis.
Tinea pedis affects the feet, is extremely common, and often is relatively asymptomatic, with very mild scaling; however, it may become symptomatic when the feet are moist, warm, and confined for prolonged periods of time (ie, several days).
This infection is more common in patients in whom saliva may accumulate at the corners of the mouth, such as adolescents with braces and older patients in whom wearing away of the teeth produces a fold of skin at the corners of the mouth.
