The Township is located in the Southeast portion of the state and is approximately five square miles bordered by the Delaware River, Darby Creek, and what was Bow creek and the back channel around Hog Island.
Tinicum went on to be an industrial area with the Westinghouse Electric Company and Lester Piano Works being the primary sources of employment for Tinicum and the surrounding communities for many years.
Tinicum presently has a population of approximately 4350 people but with the eight hotels / motels which have a total of 1610 rooms, it is a temporary residence for many travelers and business persons.

Tinicum resident Edward Marshall, by reputation the best foot traveler in the colonies, was one of the walkers who made the "Penn’s Purchase Great Walk" in 1737.
Tohickon Valley County Park and Tinicum County Park are located in Tinicum Township along with three of the county's covered bridges: Uhlerstown Covered Bridge on Hill Road, Erwinna Covered Bridge on Geigel Hill Road, and Frankenfield Covered Bridge on Cafferty Road.

New to this year’s list is the 1799 Lazaretto on the Delaware River (Tinicum Township) which for nearly a century served as the port of Philadelphia’s quarantine station, believed to be the nation’s oldest surviving example of its type.
The township intends to seek a grant to pay for a feasibility study which would, it is hoped, demonstrate viable and appropriate re-use alternatives for the Lazaretto, and thereby inform the township’s decisions regarding acquiring the property.
According to Preservation Pennsylvania, threatened are not only several historic structures, but also the character of the downtown which is currently thriving as a traditional mix of retail, commercial, restaurant, and residential uses.

DEP Southeast Regional Watershed Coordinator Nancy Crickman helped launch the Tinicum Township Board of Commissioners’ Jensen Avenue Tide Gate Restoration Project June 1 to help improve area water quality.
Tinicum Township recently received a $261,202 Growing Greener Grant to replace the existing manually operated tide gate with a self- regulating tide (SRT) gate.
Crickman presented a Growing Greener Grant check to Tinicum Township Commissioners Thomas Giancristoforo and William Wasch, and Township Engineer James MacCombie at the proposed location of the new tide gate adjacent to the John Heinz Wildlife Refuge.
