Tintwistle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tintwistle is village and civil parish in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England.
Until 1974's Local Government Act Tintwistle was part of the Tintwistle Rural District in Cheshire.
It was transferred to the jurisdiction of Derbyshire because it was decided to exclude it from Greater Manchester, and it would otherwise have been left an exclave.

It will bring greater road safety and peace to Tintwistle and remove the congestion blight from Glossop that has hitherto hampered the town’s development.
Every morning Glossop is gridlocked and Tintwistle terrorized by slow-moving, heavy traffic with a disproportionately high amount of heavy-goods vehicles passing along the A628 and A57.
In 1998, the Labour Government agreed to look again at the feasibility of the Tintwistle Mottram Bypass, which had been so callously removed from the Road Program by the then Conservative Government in 1991.

However, in this case I know that for the safety of people in Tintwistle, the economy of the whole of Glossopdale and the environment which we all share, this road is essential.

To accommodate the projected increase of traffic to 40,900 vehicles per day by 2015 from the present 11,000, the A628 would be upgraded with carriage widening and the Mottram-Tintwistle bypass.
Although the full extent of the plans have yet to be made public and despite the fact the bypass would double the amount of traffic in the area by 2022, the bypass has the support of the Peak Park Transport Forum, including the Park Authority.
CPRE believes that building a new road is not the answer to the congestion problems and says that Government policy requires a range of solutions to be examined, with road building an option of last resort.

The scheme proposed in 2004 comprises the construction of a 6km by-pass for the villages of Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle, and modifications to the A628 and A616 corridor between Tintwistle and junctions 35a and 36 of the M1.
The road building plans, as they stand at the moment, threaten the unique landscape around this area, more specifically the beautiful Longdendale valley, the nature reserve of Swallow's Woods, open moorland, and as some have argued, ultimately the whole of the northern Peak District by laying the groundwork a future major M1/M67 link road.
