Tiny Music, their latest effort appears to be the culmination of their experiments in hard-soft rock, which first began on their sophomore effort, Purple.
To say the least this music has somewhat of a surrealistic touch to it, most evident on songs such as 'Art School Girl', 'Adhesive' etc. Explaining or comparing this effort in terms of the Pilots' previous efforts is somewhat of a futile attempt simply because this new album is in a completely different vein.
Her music varies from the playful and lighthearted to the inquisitive and almost sad, yet in all this it is easy to notice the touch of cynicism that seems to season almost every tune on this album.

Not taking anything away from STP's music, but it continues to be the type where you say to yourself, "This sounds like..." Early on, it was Pearl Jam and Soundgarden progressing now to a seventies retro meets Jane's Addiction with a country/hula twang thrown in.

When Stone Temple Pilots released their third album, Tiny Music...Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop, in March of 1996, fans greeted it with open arms, expecting to hear some more of the commerical rock that had been all over the band's first two multiplatinum efforts, Core and Purple.
Recording Tiny Music proved to be a chore, as the band and Weiland seemed ready to implode at any moment.
Tiny Music is one of those albums that has such a wonderful air about it, an atmosphere if you will, that is so tough to create and capture.

There were slow songs before like "Creep", "Plush", "Big Empty", and so on, but those albums don't suck, do they?(NO!!) If they were going to make an album that sounded exactly like their previous albums, they would sound like the Pumpkins or something, which is very bad.

Stone Temple Pilots - Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican...
Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop is the oddly titled third release from underrated rockers The Stone Temple Pilots, with their previous releases Core and Purple they amassed huge sales and unfair critical loathing being branded as a tag along band to such acts as Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam.
The copy cat tag remained with the band throughout their entire career although they went some way to dispelling this myth with everything released past Core (which in itself was a fantastic album and should not be discounted), and none more so than with this album.

The songs are incredibly weak with the best of a bad bunch being 'And So I Know' and 'Seven Caged Tigers'.
Both these songs are fairly melodic and offer some respite from the drivel that precedes them, but are in themselves still fairly average tracks.

One of the few survivors of the ’90s grunge/alternative era, STP has consistently produced a record every two or three years: Core (1992), Purple (1994), Tiny Music… Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996), No.
An amalgam of straightforward hard-rock songs, Brazilian dips, waltz segments and synthesizer dabbles, the new album is, in many ways, an exercise in eclecticism.
STP stowed themselves away in a 20-acre estate in Malibu, CA, while formulating the songs, which facilitated a smoother recording.

The arrest came weeks after the commercially successful but critically skewered quartet halted preproduction for "Tiny Music." It was then that Kretz and brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo (guitars) took matters into their own hands, regrouping with Weiland at Westerly Ranch in Santa Ynez, Calif., in October.

Though there are hints of grunge scattered throughout the album, what makes Tiny Music impressive is how the band brings in elements of psychedelia, trancy shoegaze, jangle pop, and other forms of melodic alternative guitar pop.
By accentuating their pop tendencies in both their riffs and melodies, they are able to slip in a number of creative arrangements which manage to expand their musical repertoire significantly.

With this, their third album, it is simply sour grapes to not acknowledge that these guys have come into their own as a group, both artistically and stylistically.
Admirably, Tiny Music features a fairly direct, straightforward rhythm section that avoids excess clutter and allows the songs to work as the melody-based pop songs they are intended to be.

From here, the DeLeo brothers and drummer Eric Kretz show a willingness to musically experiment with Beatlesque songs ("Lady Picture Show"), a Leon Redbone-like instrumental replete with slack-guitar phrasings ("Daisy") and a loung-ey track that lulls the listener with liberal applications of vibraphone and harpsichord ("And So I Know").
Lyrically, Weiland continues to enigmatically allude to matters of personal importance--whether it be the price of fame in "Adhesive," featuring a muted trumpet solo by Dave Ferguson that conveys the song's somber tone, or the shallowness of a fictional girlfriend in "Art School Girl."
