Tioga County is located in the south central part of New York State adjacent to the Pennsylvania border.
Tioga has been referred to as the “mother county” since the counties of Broome and Chemung, as well as parts of Tompkins, Cortland and Chenango were formed from Tioga’s original boundaries.
The earliest traceable inhabitants of the county were the Algonquin Indians, a primarily agricultural civilization that was later driven out by the Iroquois.

The eastern boundary of Tryon County was approximately five miles west of the present city of Schenectady, and the county included the western part of the Adirondack Mountains and the area west of the West Branch of the Delaware River.
Tioga County was reduced in size in 1798 by the splitting off of Chemung County (which also included part of the present Schuyler County and by the combination of a portion with a portion of Herkimer County to create Chenango County.
Tioga County is located in southwest New York State, west of Binghamton and directly north of the border with Pennsylvania.

Three rural counties in north-central Pennsylvania, Bradford, Tioga, and Sullivan, faced the same problem: the private refuse collection and disposal sector either was non-existent or ill-equipped to pursue and permit disposal facilities for municipal waste under the 1968 law.
The 1988 regulations also affected the Bradford County landfill, which was upgraded to a full double-lined landfill and meets all current requirements, including federal standards established in 1991.
The new Tioga County facility accepts construction and demolition waste, municipal waste for transfer to the Bradford County landfill, and has facilities to recycle 30 tons of recyclable materials per day.
