Headed out to see Tioga Pass for the first time this year in a little while and then will come back on Sonora Pass on my 2nd visit this year.
P.S. Of course, Ebbetts Pass was as awesome as ever too, just a lot less snow on that pass than just a few weeks ago when it opened.
I came back east on Sonora Pass today and a good majority of the snow is gone there compared to a little over 3 weeks ago.

I was thrilled to conquer my first pass of the journey, 9,945' Tioga Pass.
I hadn't done any elevation training before my trip and I did not how the altitude would affect me. I also didn't know if my knees were ready for all the climbing (especially since my bike weighed about 110 lbs with all my gear!).
By the way, the gentleman to the left in the photo asked me to join his motorcycle gang but it didn't work out because I was unfortunately heading in the opposite direction.

The trail heads off in the general direction of the pass, crossing a couple of moraines near the beginning and then ascending gradually and steadily.
Unlike Mono Pass (from which you can look down to Mono Lake) there is no view of Owens Valley from this pass, but the view of snow-covered peaks made up for that.
On a previous walk to Mono Pass I had climbed a ridge from which I thought I could see Parker Pass, and this low ridge seemed to be that very same ridge.

After passing a few smaller patches of snow, it looked like we were up above snow line for good, so here Nate changed into his telemark gear.
After passing Tioga Pass Resort, and with about 2 miles to go to the pass, Nate decides he's tired of slipping backwards with every step and puts the climbing skins on his telemark skis.
After the pass, we hiked 8 miles downhill toward the Meadows -- these 8 miles seemed longer than they should have because we were expecting to be able to ski/snowboard, but the snow was too soft and the grade of the road too gentle and only rarely could gravity pull us downhill.

This proposal would have made it very difficult and expensive to operate trips such as TIOGA PASS is known for.

When Tioga Pass (Hwy 120), Sonora Pass (Hwy 108), Monitor Pass (Hwy 89), and Ebbets Pass (Hwy 4) are closed, the shortest way to Yosemite Valley from Lee Vining is over Carson Pass (Hwy 88) through Minden, NV, and Jackson, CA, which is about 300 miles and at least 6 hours of driving.
Normally when the pass is open it is about 80 miles and two hours of driving.

My skis wouldn’t float at all the next day and I trudged on up to my knees, until the snow was building up on the bottom of my skis so much I finally took them off and walked waist deep.
By the time I was at this point of the picture, I was back on my skis, only a short distance form the pay booth at the top of the pass, and cheerful enough, to once again, take in the scenery.

There are four GPS routes in this file: The first route (TIOGA - 120, shown in red below) represents the waypoints to go over Tioga Pass (via Hwy 120) from the junction of Hwy 120 and 108 to Hwy 395 near Lee Vining.
On Hwy 108 (west of Sonora Pass) you should be able to get Sno Park permits in the town of Strawberry (waypoint STRAWB, 35 miles east of Sonora Pass) where the highway crosses the South Fork of the Stanislaus River.
There is no parking exactly at Sonora Pass (waypoint SONORP) but about one tenth of a mile west of the pass a small paved road leads to some picnic tables with a great sunrise view, an outhouse, and parking.

The road became a genuine two lane marvel during the summer of 1964.
One night during the summer of '63, we closed the station at 11pm and six other guys climbed into my '50 Ford coupe for a trip over Tioga Pass to Hawthorne, Nevada for some casino fun.
