Mount Dana is to the east of the pass.
Dana Meadows is immediately east of the pass alongside the highway, as the pass itself is roughly angled north/south as opposed to east/west.

Tioga Road was completed in 1915, and paved in 1937.
If road opened then closed briefly again, the earliest opening and latest closing date is used.
For example, in 1999 the pass was closed from Nov. 18-Dec. 23, but the "days open" figure includes these 35 days that it was closed.

The winter of 1999 - 2000 provided a rare opportunity for park visitors to explore the Tioga Pass area all the way through December and into early January when the first big snows finally arrived.
The lower angle of the sun combined with the steep walls of the mountains along Tioga Pass make for an interesting play of light and shadow.

Tioga Pass goes into the Park from the Eastern side..It is often closed (Usually due to snow) into mid-June..
Tioga Pass doesn't involve such ups and downs, but you do go down to about 4000 feet and then up over the pass at nearly 10000 feet, and down to the Valley.
The Tioga Road was not crowded by that standard though I was surprised that it seemed 3 of 5 cars were foriegn tourists from our vista stops (Olmstead etc)So thanks for not letting others scare us off of 89 and 120.

After passing Tioga Pass Resort, and with about 2 miles to go to the pass, Nate decides he's tired of slipping backwards with every step and puts the climbing skins on his telemark skis.
After the pass, we hiked 8 miles downhill toward the Meadows -- these 8 miles seemed longer than they should have because we were expecting to be able to ski/snowboard, but the snow was too soft and the grade of the road too gentle and only rarely could gravity pull us downhill.
Nate had to leave the road and find a snowy path in the hillside a couple of times when the road was bare, since he didn't want to wreck his skis and they're a pain to take off.

The trail heads off in the general direction of the pass, crossing a couple of moraines near the beginning and then ascending gradually and steadily.
Unlike Mono Pass (from which you can look down to Mono Lake) there is no view of Owens Valley from this pass, but the view of snow-covered peaks made up for that.
On a previous walk to Mono Pass I had climbed a ridge from which I thought I could see Parker Pass, and this low ridge seemed to be that very same ridge.

On a positive note, I soon discovered that the road was in fact only plowed as far as the Yosemite Institute, and thereafter was covered with a couple feet of snow.
The road beyond the gate was no longer paved, but it had a thick and fresh appearing bed of gravel on it, so I assume it gets used by someone for something.
Went yet further down the road, watching the trail on the opposite side of the river deteriorate further and further until, lo and behold, I found a bridge that crossed the river.

They closed Tioga Pass a couple of days ago for snow and ice but reopened it the next day.
Tioga Road from the Valley is OK, a little narrow and curvey, speed limit 45.
Tioga Pass to Lee Vining is very steep and can be scary in places but there are plenty of turnouts so just go slow and if your brakes start getting hot just pull over and let'em cool.

The seasonal closure of the Tioga Pass road (CA 120) renders the standard approach from the national park impassible for cars from (roughly) mid-November to late May. The NPS closes the road at Crane Flat, 40-odd miles from Mount Dana.
In mid-Spring (usually coincident with the commencment of fishing season in late April), the road is plowed up to the eastern park entrance of Yosemite at the pass itself (although the NPS generally does not open the gate until a month or so later).
Note that although the road will be gated about 3 miles west of Lee Vining (you can park here), the road will likely not be completely snow-covered beyond the gate, especially later in the spring.

I had been on the road in Death Valley for over one week, and I was due to meet up with my Sierra Club skier-friends in Lee Vining, CA, which is just east of Yosemite National Park.
That old wagon road (The Great Sierra Wagon Road) had been refined and straightened out over the last hundred years, and now the paved road is called the Tioga Pass Road.
Maybe the road will be plowed open by May, but meanwhile, Tuolumne Meadows is a great place to escape civilization for a few days.

That's deep snow, means there will be white stuff on the ground until fall at the highest elevations...and it looks like a late opening for the passes, even tho they are plowing Tioga now, the others (Ebbetts/Sonora) are not so blessed...
Reports are that Tioga pass will be partially open on Saturday, 5/27, up to Yosemite Creek Bridge.
Else where in the park, Glacier Point road is now open and the climbing cables have been installed on half-dome.

A landslide on the Tioga Pass Road kept us from putting out our second car for a shuttle so we decided to take a different trip starting at the same place and making a loop around the Vogelsang area.
He had missed the view from the pass so he wanted to get one last chance at what had turned out to be really awesome scenery.
This view is even more spectacular than the pass (but the pass is well worth the hike).
