Tioman was on the western trading route from China: ships went via Vietnam and Thailand, around peninsular Malaysia, either through the straits of Malacca, or on to Sumatra, Java and the straits of Sunda to the Indian Ocean.
During the 18th century, the island was said to be the haunt of pirates; it would seem that no 18th century porcelains have been discovered apart from a fine large dish with a Kangxi (1662-1722) design, acquired in Trengganu from Tioman fishermen and now in the museum at Pekan.

We went to the front side of the island, but there wasn't very good coral there (and there was another little boat), so the guy took us around the side of the island to this isolated white sand beach.

Our kids were excited to be on their first boat ride but the excitement soon wore off once we were in the open sea with nothing much to see except the monotonous scenery of mainland Malaysia in the hazy distance.

Tioman is often touted as "one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world." Now I'm not sure who (I'm Glenn, for those who didn't arrive via my home page, by the way) is on the island-rating committee, but, as it turns out, I must agree it is gorgeous.
Before we went in late March, 1997, I did a net search on Tioman and looked at guidebooks and brochures, but I really couldn't get a very clear idea of what we were in for.
I guess it took a couple of hours to get there, but there are plenty of interesting islands on the way, so it wasn't bad.

The ferry terminal had many travel outlets all specialising in tours to the nearby outlying islands but the majority of it was focused on trips to Tioman Island, which is the largest of a group of volcanic islands in the South China Sea.
My first sight of Tioman, which was of the famous twin peaks, perked me up instantly after the monotony of travelling over the sea where not much land was in sight.
