  Flower Wasps
When a grub is located, the wasp lays an egg on it, and the developing wasp larva then eats it.
The Blue Ant is actually a species of flower wasp in the Family Tiphiidae.
The wingless, ground-dwelling females are bright metallic blue or green, and can sometimes be mistaken for a large ant.

Female Tiphiidae usually oviposit on the host grub in its cell in the soil, and they do not attempt to bury it at a greater depth, which is different than the habit of Scoliidae.
Tiphiidae cocoons are more slender than those of Scoliidae and different in form, being broader at the anterior end and smoothly rounded, tapering to a point at the posterior.
Reproduction.--Reproductive capacity of Tiphiidae is similar to Scollidae, with an average of ca.

The small Aculeate wasps of the genus Methocha are slender animals with wingless, antlike females and winged males, and they belong to the Methochinae, a subfamily of the Tiphiidae Aculeate wasps.
The phylogenetic relationships between the Tiphiidae and the Aculeta were outlined by Brothers and Carpenter (1993).
The widespread Methochinae include only few species, which are absent from the Australian region.

A project undertaken at The Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and supervised by P Weston
(In prep) Historical contingency drives the diversification of sexually deceptive orchids pollinated by the thynnine wasp genus, Neozeleboria (Tiphiidae: Thynninae).
This strongly suggests that the orchids did not differentiate at the same time as the wasps but later.

BIOLOGY AND CONSERVATION OF TIPHIA WASPS, PARASITOIDS OF TURF-INFESTING WHITE GRUBS
White grubs, the root-feeding larvae of scarab beetles, are serious pests of athletic turf in the United States.
We found two parasitic wasp species, Tiphia vernalis Rohwer 1924 (Hymenoptera: Tiphiidae) and Tiphia pygidialis Allen 1966 (Hymenoptera: Tiphiidae), to be abundant in central Kentucky and important as biological control agents for Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica Newman 1838, Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and masked chafer (Cyclocephala spp.) grubs, respectively.
Little was known about these beneficial wasps before our studies revealed details of their life history, and some ways that their benefits can be conserved.

University of Kentucky, Department of Entomology, S225 Agricultural Science Center North, Lexington, KY Wasps in the genus Tiphia (Hymenoptera: Tiphiidae) are the primary parasitoids that attack scarabaeid grubs in the soil.
Field observations suggested that parasitized grubs tend to be deeper in the soil than non-parasitized ones.

I had taken pictures of some Tiphiidae wasps that had been swarming around one particular cluster of honey-dewed leaves.
**THANKS TO Dr. Jackman at the Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University for identifying the "rods" as Tiphiidae (Tiphiid Wasps) - These wasps are often fl, with yellow or red markings.
They have stingers, which are used to attack ground-dwelling larvae of Scarab beetles or Tiger beetles.
