Sax’s direction and the editing are often ludicrously overwrought, though Sax does put together at least one particularly inspired sequence – Nan’s first time on the stage is intercut with her rehearsals and it all culminates in a kiss between Nan and Kitty, both playing men.
Throughout, Tipping the Velvet’s saving grace is its actresses, who ease it past more than one rough patch.

I loved Sarah Waters's novel, "Tipping the Velvet." Director Geoffrey Sax and screenwriter Andrew Davies have captured beautifully and vividly the novel's characters, storyline and the remarkable setting of a Victorian England that few have glimpsed.
When you think of the Victorian era you think of stuffiness and of course, an element of great sexual repression but it must be remembered that during this time, women really moved from the passive to agressive; seeking their own ideals, life and pleasures that lie therein.
As Nan Astley explains to Florence Banner in the final episode, "Tipping the Velvet" was a Victorian euphemism for cunnilingus.

I am usually disappointed by efforts to put good books on to the screen this however was not the case with "Tipping the Velvet".
Although this production gets to the same end result as the book via a different route it works perfectly for the screen, as the end works well in the book.
"Tipping the Velvet" is brilliant, truly a pleasure to watch definitely a great buy.

It's a simple plot, but one which continues to compel, and by the end of the novel, as sappy as it sounds, the reader is cheering her on as she discovers that she is at last free of the spell of her first true love and able to love again.
In short, while it's not hard to imagine Tipping the Velvet as a film, it's hard to see it as a Merchant/Ivory Helena Bonham-Carter vehicle, unless, perhaps, Gina Gershon played the lead, perhaps still in that undershirt she wore in Bound.
I mean this, of course, as a compliment.
