His invasion (1789) of Travancore, a state under British protection, provoked war anew, and in 1792 he was defeated by a force under Lord Cornwallis composed of British, Maratha, and Hyderabad troops.
In 1798, Tippoo formed a vague alliance with the French, which gave the British governor-general Lord Wellesley a pretext to invade Mysore in alliance with the nizam of Hyderabad.
Tippoo was killed (May, 1799) defending his capital at Shrirangapattana.

Finding the place much stronger than he expected, and ascertaining that Tippoo Sahib was advancing with a large force to its relief, Colonel Humberston retired towards Ponanee, closely pursued by the enemy, and blew up the forts of Mangaracotah and Ramgurh in the retreat.
Encouraged by the recapture of Bednoor, Tippoo detached a considerable force towards Mangalore, but it was attacked and defeated by Colonel Campbell, on the 6th of May. Little loss was sustained on either side, but the enemy left all their guns.
Tippoo, having now no force in the field to oppose him, advanced upon Mangalore with his whole army, consisting of 90,000 men, besides a corps of European infantry from the Isle of France, a troop of dismounted French cavalry from the Mauritius, and Lally’s corps of Europeans and natives.

Before the Revolutionary War he had spoken out in favor of the Americans, and his Whig politics and Masonic background made him what we might call today a Liberal (at least, for the era in which he lived).
In 1786, he became Governor-General of India (1786-1793) where he made reforms in the civil and military service and personally led the campaigns that won British victory in the Third Mysore War, distinguishing himself in campaigns against the Tippoo Sahib.
His Cornwallis Code of legal and administrative reform served the country well for many years, and for this he was elevated to Marquess Cornwallis in 1792, and in 1793 was promoted to General.
