The Tipstaff was similar to one presented to Commissioner Eric Silk, Q.C., of the Ontario Provincial Police on Nov. 13, 1969, by the Hon.
Originally referred to as a "tipped staff" the tipstaff was carried during and before the sixteen century in England as a practical means of reinforcing the authority of a variety of officials having some aspect of law enforcement as their duty.
The Tipstaff’s official role includes such ceremonial functions as leading the Lord Chancellor’s procession in full regalia from the House of Lords to the annual services of Her Majesty’s Judges at Westminster Abbey, opening Royal Courts of Justice after long vacations, and carrying the Court’s silver staff to the Lord Mayor’s banquet at Guildhall, London.

A new trial was ordered yesterday for a former Carnegie Mellon University professor who was sentenced last month for shooting at two Mt. Lebanon police officers, because the tipstaff at the trial may have improperly given advice to the jury.
Tipstaffs are in charge of maintaining court decorum and administering to the needs of the jury, among other responsibilities.
Tipstaffs are not permitted to discuss cases with jurors.

This is probably the rarest English silver-mounted tipstaff of a police unit that one is ever likely to find.
At any given point, there were only eight Marshalmen in service.
