John Tipton, namesake of the City and County of Tipton, was a native of Tennessee, moving to Harrison County, Indiana with his family in 1807 at the age of 11.
Tipton County was organized and named after General John Tipton by an Act of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana on January 15, 1844.

Tipton County was formed from Shelby County in 1823 and named for Captain Jacob Tipton who was killed leading his men in a battle near Fort Wayne in 1791.
Tipton's son, Armistead Blevins, who supervised the organization of Shelby County, was present when Tipton County was formed.
Covington, situated near the center of the county, was established as the county seat in 1826.

Tipton County is located in southwest Tennessee and is bordered on the north by Lauderdale County (and the Big Hatchie River); on the east by Haywood County; on the southeast by Fayette County; on the south by Shelby County; on the west by the Mississippi River (and the state of Arkansas).
The county seat, Covington, was named for Leonard Wales Covington, a native of Maryland who was killed in the battle of Chrysler's Field in 1813.
Above the Lagrange group, out-cropping upon the face of the bluff, and at the surface in the eastern part of the county, are the gravel sands and clays of the grange sand drift.

The Tipton County GIS Department is responsible for coordinating GIS data sharing among participating agencies on the GIS Board and with creating base map layers for use by these agencies and the public.
Tipton County GIS began in 2000, when the county learned it would be one of the first in the state to participate in the Tennessee Base Mapping Program.
As a result of the project, Tipton County has high-quality GIS data and is well ahead of most counties in Tennessee. Data obtained from this project includes digital orthophotos (aerial photos) from 2000, parcels, street centerlines, and city boundaries.
