 Tipulidae -- a/o cat.
The Tipulidae is divided here into subfamilies that are usually considered families by European specialists.
As might be expected in a group of insects as large and diverse as the Tipulidae, a wide variety of habitats are occupied by the larvae and adults.
The earliest fossils of Tipulidae are found in Eocene and Oligocene sediments and amber (40-45 mya), but the family is supposedly much older: about mid-Mesozoic.

Charles P. Alexander (1889-1981), entomologist and authority on the Tipulidae (crane flies), was born in Gloversville, New York.
His first paper on the family, "Fulton County (New York) Tipulidae," was published in 1910--one of 25 papers on crane flies which he authored as an undergraduate.
Alexander's research was almost exclusively focused on the study of the Tipulidae, the largest family of the order Diptera.
