Tiritiri Matangi Island lies in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, 4 km east of Whangaparaoa Peninsula on the North Island and 30 km north east of Auckland.
The first people to settle on Tiritiri Matangi were Maori of the Kawerau iwi.
Later, members of the Ngati Porou moved to Tiritiri Matangi until about 1700, when the Kawerau regained control of the island and remained until forced to retreat to Waikato in 1821 when Hongi Hika attacked from the north.

The overall goal proposed by the plan was to manage Tiritiri Matangi as a suitable habitat for some of our endangered flora and fauna, where people, particularly Aucklanders, could ultimately view these species in their natural environment.

Tiritiri Matangi is unusual because it's one of New Zealand's few open sanctuaries, which means that people are allowed to visit without official permission.
It's a continual concern to the department of conservation that one day a mouse, rat or other vermin will land on the island from a visiting boat, and cause havoc amongst the native birds, many of which are flightless and unable to defend themselves.

Although some are kept in enclosures in one or two places around the country, Tiritiri is far and away the best place to see this species.
Although it's easy to see kiwis in the "kiwi houses" which are scattered around the country, the only place I know where they can regularly be seen in the wild is on New Zealand's third largest island, Stewart Island, which is rugged, beautiful and well off the beaten path.
Little spotted kiwis have been introduced onto Tiritiri Matangi, so I was very eager to go out at night and see one.

The ants were found in March last year on Tiritiri Matangi, just off the Whangaparaoa Peninsula in the Hauraki Gulf.
Initial results from the baiting on Tiritiri Matangi look promising, with the ant activity already enormously reduced in all baited areas.

Titititi was purchased by the Crown in 1841 and by the end of 1900 had been cleared of nearly all of its original coastal forest.
