Tiritiri Matangi Island lies in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, 4 km east of Whangaparaoa Peninsula on the North Island and 30 km north east of Auckland.
The first people to settle on Tiritiri Matangi were Māori of the Kawerau iwi.
The island was farmed from 1894 to 1971 when the lease expired and management was vested in the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park Board which ceased farming operations.

Tiritiri Matangi is a 220 ha offshore island in the Hauraki Gulf, 3.5km east of Whangaparaoa Peninsula and 28 km north of Auckland.
The island continued to be leased for farming until 1971, when most of it was left to return to bush.
The overall goal proposed by the plan was to manage Tiritiri Matangi as a suitable habitat for some of our endangered flora and fauna, where people, particularly Aucklanders, could ultimately view these species in their natural environment.

The idea was to re-vegetate Tiritiri Matangi with plants grown on the island from seed sourced from the island and to release rare and endangered species of birds on the island so that visitors could see them in their natural habitat.
Tiritiri Matangi ('a place tossed by the wind') was settled by the Kawerau-A-Maki tribe.
The island was farmed continuously until the 1970's, when the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park Board was given responsibility for Tiritiri and the last of the stock removed.

Saddlebacks were entirely isolated on a few islands and were put further at risk when predators introduced by a shipwreck killed their largest population.

Titititi was purchased by the Crown in 1841 and by the end of 1900 had been cleared of nearly all of its original coastal forest.

On Tiritiri Matangi Island, work in the nursery helps toward the revegetation projects, and bird censuses assist the rangers with documenting populations of heavily managed bird species.

Islands are used as sancturies, as they are (realisticaly) the only policeable area in terms of ensuring no mammals exist on the land.
