 Saiva Canon: The Twelve Tirumurais
The ninth Tirumurai, known as Tiruvicaippa or Tiruppallantu is an anthology of hymns of nine saints.
Since the Tirumurais have been distributed for translation to different people, it is hoped that the translation work of all Tirumurais will go on simultaneously and thus cut down the time.

Tirumurukarruppatai's place in the Saiva Canon
The Eleventh Tirumurai as a collection of miscellaneous poems and hymns by various poets and saints remains problematic.
Finally, the ideology of bhakti in Tirumurai is also established in the Tirumurukārruppatai as a common phenomenon.
When most of the Tirumurai were composed, propagandists labeled the period as a 'dark age'.

An Introduction to the Tamil Siddhas - Layne Little
It was at this time that Tirumular, himself one of the 64 canonized Shaivite saints or Nayanars of the Saiva Siddhanta sect, authored the Tirumantiram which fully defined the nature of the Tamil Siddha cult up until the present era.
The text also became the 10th book of the Saiva Siddhanta canon, which is referred to as the Tirumurai.
Though it was the one work outlining the philosophy of the Saiva Siddhanta cult, the orthodox followers within the Saiva Siddhanta sect have always had a difficult time fully accepting the many passages which discuss the worship of the Goddess and the Kundalini Yoga practices so characteristic of Tantrism.

Bhakti initially flourished in South India through the great Vaishnava saints known as the twelve Alvars (6th–9th centuries).
Shaivism also has its bhakti traditions and during roughly the same period 63 Nayanars (bhakti poets) wrote songs that now form the twelve books of the Tirumurai.
Shortly after, and especially from 1500 CE onwards, a great devotional renaissance swept through the entire sub-continent.
