In 1953 the eleven northern districts of Madras State became the new state of Andhra Pradesh, and Bellary District was divided between Andhra Pradesh and Mysore State (present-day Karnataka).
Tamil Nadu acquired its present boundaries on 1 November 1956, when Dakshina Kannada and Malabar districts were ceded to Mysore and Kerala states, respectively, and Kanyakumari District of erstwhile Travancore-Cochin state was ceded to Madras State.
In 1956, Madras State was made up of 13 districts: Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Madras, Madurai, The Nilgiris, North Arcot, Ramanthapuram, Salem, South Arcot, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappallli, and Tirunelveli.

Thanjavur district is one of the 30 districts of the state of Tamil Nadu, in southeastern India.
The district is located in the centre-east of the state, bounded on the northeast by Nagapattinam District, on the east by Tiruvarur district, on the south by the Palk Strait, on the west by Pudukkottai District, and on the north by the Kollidam River, across which lie Tiruchirappalli and Perambalur districts.
It is irrigated by an elaborate system of dams, cuts and canals in connection with the Kaveri and its chief distributary the Kollidam these two rivers and the lesser distributaries run from west to east.

IN Pudukottai district, heavy rains washed away standing paddy crops on vast stretches of land and caused substantial damage to roads, tanks, culverts, causeways and bridges.
The district received 315 mm of rainfall in just four days, which is two-thirds of the rainfall that it normally receives from the three month-long northeast monsoon.

 The Hindu : Tamil Nadu News : Rise in advances given by Tiruvarur district banks
The total advances given by banks in Tiruvarur district have increased from Rs.518.56 crores to Rs.548.80 crores, as on September, 2004, according to P. Ekambaram, Tiruvarur Collector.
The Collector appreciated the bankers for their active involvement in sanctioning of loans under this scheme and asked the banks to complete the disbursement before month-end and concentrate more on key activity loans so that the income level of the self-help groups would increase.
G.Jayachandran, Senior Regional Manager of Indian Overseas Bank, Nagapattinam (Tiruvarur additional charge), said that Tiruvarur district had reached 63 per cent of credit deposit ratio for the first time and the achievement under annual credit plan was 104 per cent in agricultural advances.

District Collector M Veera Shanmugha Moni says the administration is getting lots of enquiries from India and abroad."Many people have come forward to adopt the children who have suddenly become orphans."

Sivapunniyam, who was earlier approached by two police officials demanding the note, had told them the note had been sent to the Tiruvarur district CPI secretary, who in turn had sent it to the party headquarters in Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu government on Monday informed the Supreme Court that it was common for labourers in Tiruvarur district to eat 'robust rats' and emphatically denied that they have been forced to adopt such eating habits due to starvation.
The state government told this to a bench comprising Chief Justice V N Khare and Justice S B Sinha during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation filed by Congress leader and senior advocate Ashwini Kumar.
Quoting a report of the Collector of Tiruvarur district, the government said, "Before water is let out in the Cauvery River and canals, farmers usually ferret out field rats in the ridges of the fields.

KUMBAKKONAM: The government has taken intensive steps to raise Samba paddy crops in 3.20 lakh hectares in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts in the Cauvery delta region, official sources said.
The transplantation of Samba paddy seedlings have been completed in 12,000 hectares in Nagapattinam district, 7000 hectares in Tiruvarur district and 2,240 hectares in Thanjavur district, official sources said.
The direct sowing of paddy seeds was taken up in about 50,000 hectares in the Cauvery delta area.
