TISHA B'AV The Fast of Tisha B'Av (The Ninth of Av) falls this year on Wednesday evening July 17th and Thursday July 18th.
Tisha B'Av commemorates the destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E. and the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 C.E. Both events occurred on the same day of the Hebrew calendar, the ninth of Av (or at least, that's how our tradition records events).
On Tisha B'Av, we mourn not only the loss of our religious center, but also the loss of so many Jews in defense of our faith.

The recitation of Kinot on the morning of Tishah B'av is an important part of our mourning for the destruction of the Temple and other disasters that have befallen the Jewish people.
Our current plan for Tishah B'av morning (Sunday, August 14) at TBS is to hold parallel trad and egal services for shacharit and Torah reading, and then join together for the recitation of kinot.
This list is not in any way set in concrete; if someone wishes to introduce a kinah that is not on this list, we will be happy to add it; likewise, we may drop some kinot that no one wants to introduce, in the interests of time.

Tisha B'Av primarily commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples, both of which were destroyed on the ninth of Av (the first by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.E.; the second by the Romans in 70 C.E.).
Although this holiday is primarily meant to commemorate the destruction of the Temple, it is appropriate to consider on this day the many other tragedies of the Jewish people, many of which occurred on this day, most notably the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.
Tisha B'Av is the culmination of a three week period of increasing mourning, beginning with the fast of the 17th of Tammuz, which commemorates the first breach in the walls of Jerusalem, before the First Temple was destroyed.

The first historic tragedy to occur on Tisha B'Av was when the Jews in the generation of Moses accepted the Spies' slanderous report, thereby squandering the chance to fulfill their destiny in Israel.
On Tisha B'Av, we strive to understand what the loss of the Temple means - and how we can connect with our destiny, our struggle, our mission and our identity as a people.
This Tisha B'Av, we must remember that the tears we shed for the destruction are precisely those tears which bring about redemption.

For the next 38 years, therefore, the night of Tisha bAv was marred by a heavy toll in dead, and the stillness of the desert air was rent by the cries of the bereaved.
By the end of the forty years wandering through the desert, none was left of that generation (with the exception of the tribe of Levi) save Joshua and Caleb, the only two faithful members of the "spies" who had been loyal to G-d.
We commemorate these five calamities by fasting on Tisha bAv from sundown of the eighth day to nightfall of the ninth.

 Avodah V5 #102
Haaros Rabbi Yaakov Bernstein Beis Medrash Chofetz Chayim Kiryas Radin Project Genesis The Ancient Mourning Yom Kippur and Tisha B'av have certain similarities in their practices, yet they are essentially different.
Laws which illustrate the differing functions of the two days include the following: On Tisha B'av, learning Torah is basically not allowed, and we sit on the ground as mourners.
The reason for similarity of practices of Yom Kippur and Tisha B'av is that both are days of introspection and self-improvement or "Teshuva;" however, Tisha B'av is a time of mourning over the past, while Yom Kippur is a time of rejoicing over the future.
