Tiswas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tiswas was an anarchic Saturday morning children's British TV show which ran from January 5 1974 to April 3 1982.
Tiswas took the children's Saturday morning television mould and smashed it to bits, with its anarchic nature, although it began life as a 'links' strand between many 'filler' programmes, such as cartoons and old movies.
A definitive line-up of Tiswas presenters regrouped for a resurrection of Tiswas on the ITV Telethon of 1988.

TISWAS TISWAS TISWAS - TV Cream's Tiswas compendium.
As well as the likening of current favourite SM:TV to the 'Was at its heights, the short-lived '90s Saturday morning show Wow served up a version of both the gunge element of 'Was (hardly an innovation by the standards of kids' TV at that time) and the wanton disruption of the running order.
In the spring of 2000 Carlton TV floated the idea of repeating some of the remaining Tiswas shows to beef up their anaemic late-night schedules, presumably in a re-edited form, on a thirtysomething nostalgia tip, as was the style at the time.
John Gorman was recently approached by another company with a view to putting together a new version of Tiswas, but, quite rightly, turned down the idea on the grounds that it was the chemistry of the original personalities that made it work, and that could not now be repeated.

Tiswas stood for Today Is Saturday, Wear A Smile and this is what Saturdays were made for.
Leading presenter, Chris Tarrant, looked as if he had been out on the beer the night before (he claimed in later years that this was in fact often the case).
By the end of its fifth series, Tiswas was shown across six ITV regions, and the eternally bedenimed and thigh-booted Sally James (from LWT's defunct Saturday Scene) brought a breezy sexiness to Saturday morning television with her insider view of the pop scene and 'Almost Legendary' interviews.

Tiswas Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
It’s hard to describe “Tiswas”, the anarchic Saturday morning kids show which was broadcast across various ITV franchises in the seventies and early eighties.
Saturday was Tiswas day for many kids who tired of the formulaic Saturday magazine programme which was being firmly established by “Swap Shop” on the BBC (1978-1982).
Still, there is a legacy of “Tiswas” fans who remember getting their Saturday morning fix of mayhem and custard pies, who will remember those days with affection.

The main presenter of this first incarnation of Tiswas was John Asher, who introduced a mish-mash of film clips, competitions, cartoons and a short news feature presented by a reporter from the local news programme ATV Today, a young lad by the name of Chris Tarrant.
Tiswas Disco - a filmed insert of various presenters and characters in a nightclub, dancing to an anonymous-sounding disco beat, which would stop abruptly to allow the telling of a joke, and then start up again.

 Television Heaven
A to Z of TV Tiswas (Today Is Saturday Wear A Smile) was the show that revolutionised British Saturday morning children's television in the mid 1970's, by taking the tried and tested format of wholesome family fare and replacing it with two hours of raucous slap-stick, manic humour and risqué jokes.
Beginning in the Midlands in 1974 it was several years before the show gained full network coverage, with many ITV regions opting out of various segments to replace them with cartoons.
TISWAS was fun, insanity, and crowd-pleasing programme making which bravely opened up previously uncharted territory in the field of children's entertainment on television.
