 Encyclopedia article on Tisza [EncycloZine]
The Tisza (in Hungarian, Ukrainian: Tysa/Тиса, Romanian, Slovak and Serbian: Tisa, German: Theiß) is a river, tributary of the Danube and one of the major rivers of Central Europe, passing through Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro.
The length of the Tisza in Hungary used to be 1419 km.
It turned out, however, that the resulting Tisza-tó (Lake Tisza) became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary, since it had similar features to Lake Balaton at drastically cheaper prices and it was not crowded.

István Tisza - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tiszas were originally an Calvinist common nobility (nobility with no title; often regarded as equivalent to the British gentry) family from Transylvania, and since their title was very recent, they were much disliked and resented by the greater noble (nobility with titles) families.

Kálmán Tisza - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tisza was the leader of the Liberal Party which dominated Hungarian politics for the latter part of the 19th century and into the first decade of the twentieth.
His son, István Tisza, was to prove a similarly dominant figure in the next, and more divisive, period of Hungarian history.
Tisza, like British prime minister Robert Walpole, believed in "letting sleeping dogs lie," and governed in a very conservative manner, opposing any extension of the franchise.

Tisza stoutly stood by his rules, on the ground that this was a case in which the form must be sacrificed to the substance of parliamentary government.
During the Provisorium (1861-1865) Tisza fought for 'constitutional reform in the columns of the Hon and the Magyar Sajto, his leading articles, afterwards collected and published under the title of Alfoldi Levelek (Letters from the Alfold), being by far the most important contribution to the controversy.
Tisza thereupon resigned and retired from public life.

Kiss Endre: Nation and liberalism (István Tisza's etatistic-defensive nationalism)
Tisza's positive nation variant plays partly a constitutive role in forming his own policies, partly it embraces one of the wide-spread attitudes of the period, the behaviour and attitude that was then well understood, and that was also greatly characteristic.
Accordingly, in Tisza's case the ominous duality characteristic comprehensively of the whole dualist political life was exrtremely sharply manifested: the open and dynamic structures of a modern society were built on political-ideological fundaments where the "invisible" factors were the decisive ones, and latter these became even less visible for the representatives of later periods.
Tisza can hardly bear the nation "split into two hostile groups", and it is well known that this diagnosis with its dynamic shifts corresponded to the real situation of the society of the beginning of the century.

 First World War.com - Who's Who - Count Istvan Tisza de Boros-Jeno
Tisza's insistence that all diplomatic avenues be explored before a military solution settled upon did however rob Austria-Hungary of the element of surprise during the early phase of the war.
Count Istvan Tisza de Boros-Jeno (1861-1918) served as Hungarian Prime Minister from the war's inception until his ousting in May 1917 with the accession of Karl I as Emperor in place of the ageing Franz-Josef.
Consequently Tisza acted as the dove in the Austro-Hungarian government during the July Crisis of July 1914, restraining the more impetuous Imperial Foreign Minister Berchtold and Chief of Staff Conrad from launching a pre-emptive strike at Serbia in early July (without even a declaration of war beforehand).

 Graf István Burián von Rajecz
Tisza was opposed to Burián's proposal, because he feared the repercussions it might have on Roumania, another neutral whose interest in Transylvania was the most well-known secret.
In truth, Tisza was reluctant to run with this idea, because both he and Burián were sensitive to the historic friendship of Hungary and Poland, and he offered an independent Poland as the solution.
Tisza adhered to Burián's suggestion, and drew up a partition scheme whereby Bulgaria and Albania would take most of Serbia, leaving the Empire either with the northwest corner as compensation or else the Sanjak of Novi Pazar as a wedge between Serbia and Montenegro.

Considering Tisza Lake as a whole from ecological point of view it can be classified as a shallow-lake type reservoir, but its large scale mosaicity is well represented by marshes, shallow-lakes, water pits excavated by floods, large and medium sized small water courses of the level of the common bream (Abramis brama).
The form of the recent image of the Tisza Lake is the result of a longer process, in consequence of this water spaces differring sharply from each other in habit, hydrological and hydrobiological features have been created.

 CHAPTER XXI: THE INDEPENDENT KINGDOM
Tisza, a statesman of singular probity and tenacity, seemed to be the one person capable of carrying out the programme of the king and the majority.
Yet Tisza's aim also was to convert the old polyglot Hungarian kingdom into a homogeneous Magyar state, and the methods which he employed - notably the enforced magyarization of the subject races, which formed part of the reformed educational system introduced by him - certainly did not err on the side of moderation.
Tisza's policy on both these occasions increased his unpopularity in Hungary, but in the highest circles at Vienna he was now regarded as indispensable.

(Tisza was likely to accept this proposal, but these things were beyond his reach now.) Such a proposition was never spoken aloud by Berchtold, but his refusal to denounce this plan in front of the Russian and French ambassadors led especially Sazonov to conclude that this was the Ballplatz's goal.
Berchtold soon discovered that Tisza was the only voice not in favour of war against Belgrade and a great deal of pressure and reason was needed to convince the Hungarian Premier to consent to what amounted to a compromise.
This was problematic, because by the time Tisza had come round and given his consent, French President Poincare and members of his cabinet were on their way to St. Petersburg to visit the Tsar.
