Wellington, believe it……… or not, was graced with a spectacularly warm 25 degrees and a light northerly breeze for this inaugural event hosted by the club, which is renowned for it’s strong S.L.S. Surfboat crews over the years.
The start was from Titahi Bay and turned right and across the Northerly swell following the rocky shoreline along the cliffs and over to Karehana Bay in Plimmerton, early on during this first leg the field quickly split into 3 packs with the first being led by Todd Grace, Martyn McDowell and Sam Blyde.
From Karehana Bay the competitors headed around to Rewarewa Point slightly into the Northerly, then turning left and heading through the small swells to Mana Island, this stretch spread the packs further apart and slightly spread the paddlers in packs two and three.
