Titania (moon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Titania should not be confused with Titan, a moon of Saturn, or the asteroid 593 Titania.
The name "Titania" and the names of all four satellites of Uranus then known were suggested by Herschel's son John Herschel in 1852 at the request of William Lassell, who had discovered Ariel and Umbriel the year before ([1]).
Titania is composed of roughly 50% water ice, 30% silicate rock, and 20% methane-related organic compounds.

In this study we examine the use of titania nanotube arrays for the photocleavage of water into hydrogen and oxygen gas under ultraviolet irradiation with particular emphasis on the rate of hydrogen generation and on the influence of the architecture of the titania nanotubes on the photochemical properties.
Titania nanotubes were grown from a starting titanium sheet (0.25 mm thick, 99.7% purity purchased from Aldrich Corporation) by potentiostatic anodization in an electrolyte of 0.5% HF + acetic acid mixed in a 7:1 ratio using a platinum counter electrode (99% purity Alfa-Aesar Corporation).
The chemical dissolution of titania in the HF electrolyte plays a key role in nanotube formation, and is the factor ultimately limiting nanotube length.

Titania nanotube sensors clean themselves (April 2004) - News - nanotechweb.org
Titania nanotubes have photocatalytic properties around 100 times greater than any other form of titania.
In this study the researchers used titania nanotubes that were 200 nm long, had an inner diameter of 22 nm, 13nm thick walls and a 12 nm thick coating of palladium.
As well as their application as high-performance, self-cleaning hydrogen sensors, the devices can also be tailored to detect other chemicals by doping the titania nanotubes with metals such as tin, gold, silver, copper or niobium.

Titania nanotubes make supersensitive hydrogen sensors
Titania nanotubes are 1500 times better than the next best material for sensing hydrogen and may be one of the first examples of materials properties changing dramatically when crossing the border between real world sizes and nanoscopic dimensions, according to a Penn State materials scientist.
Hydrogen entering an array of titania nanotubes flows around all the surfaces, but it also splits into individually charged atoms and permeates the surface of the nanotubes.
The researchers suggest that "the hydrogen molecules get dissociated at the titania surface, diffusing into the titania lattice, and act as electron donors." The researchers believe that this mechanism makes the nanotubes sensitive to hydrogen.

"By doping the titania nanotubes with trace amounts of different metals such as tin, gold, silver, copper, niobium and others, a wide variety of chemical sensors can be made," says Grimes.

ViP Organics @ HMI: Nanostructured dye-sensitized titania
The high crystallinity of the nanoclusters, and the possibility to engineer their size, shape and organisation, open a way to provide a large active interface for the electron transfer from the dye molecules to the titania.
