Titanic (1997) at Reel Classics: a review
When it comes to analyzing whether or not Titanic (1997) is a good film, I think an attempt must be made to understand the film maker's objectives when he created it, in order to have some kind of criteria by which to judge it and determine whether or not he succeeded.
In the 1953 film (in which you'll notice a few similarities, but of which, the 1997 film is not a remake), the focus of the movie is the breakup of Stanwyck and Webb's marriage; the Titanic is only the setting.
The 1953 movie could easily have been transplanted to any other time and place with a tragic end, and its essence would have remained the same because in the 1953 film, the plot and characters are the focus.

I've even heard tell there was an actual ship called the Titanic that went down in 1912 about four hundred miles south of Newfoundland, but this was probably just a rumor spread by Cameron and his crew to publicize their picture.
In any case, among the better Titanic movies to come along in the cinema besides Cameron's epic were "A Night to Remember" (1958) and the subject of our review today, "Titanic" (1953).
Whatever, this 1953 "Titanic" is not so much a documentary retelling of the sinking of the great ship as it is a human drama with the sinking as a convenient background setting.

The steel used in constructing the RMS Titanic was probably the best plain carbon ship plate available in the period of 1909 to 1911, but it would not be acceptable at the present time for any construction purposes and particularly not for ship construction.
Whereas the 1953 movie used a 8.5 m model of the ship, the 1997 movie recreated a nearly full size, 236 m long exterior set of the Titanic standing nearly 14 m tall from the water line to the boat deck floor, with its four funnels towering another 16 m.

What’s the big deal about “Titanic?” Sure it’s the highest grossing film of all time, gathering over 600 million dollars domestically, it enjoyed a phenomenal run at the box office, spanning months, and is heralded by many as one of the greatest epics ever created.
Whereas the 1953 film was obviously less dynamic than its modern equivalent, I felt a greater sense of attachment for the people who filled the cabins, saw them grown and change; something that did not happen in Cameron’s film.
While I may not think much of “Titanic” as a film, I’ll be the first to admit that Paramount has put together a top-notch DVD package that will absolutely thrill fans.
