Titanic (1997) at Reel Classics: a review
In the 1953 film (in which you'll notice a few similarities, but of which, the 1997 film is not a remake), the focus of the movie is the breakup of Stanwyck and Webb's marriage; the Titanic is only the setting.
The 1953 movie could easily have been transplanted to any other time and place with a tragic end, and its essence would have remained the same because in the 1953 film, the plot and characters are the focus.
In this movie, the setting of the story overwhelms the story itself-- so much so that at one point after the ship had begun to sink, Kate and Leo appeared on the screen and I realized I had forgotten they were still on the boat; so much else was going on.

Titanic was to be one of the last movies Fox filmed in the academy ratio of 1.37:1.
Titanic was directed by Jean Negulesco and produced by Charles Brackett, who was disappointed by the box office results of"Titanic": "Maybe people had a certain reluctance to seeing a film in which, they knew, almost every one in the cast would be drowned".
Even though Titanic "purists" looked down on the 1953 "Titanic", for it's sloppy attention to detail, the film remains very popular, and certain aspects of the film were resurrected in 1997 for James Cameron's "Titanic".

The sinking of the Titanic was neither the first nor the largest maritime disaster, yet it has lodged itself in modern consciousness more deeply than any other.
Perhaps it's because the story of the Titanic reflects so perfectly the story of the human race on a larger scale: a group of people with riches and opportunities distributed unequally, but bound together in sharing the same small world and the same destiny.
In the new movie, however, it is the selfishness and lack of heroism of most people that is so striking.

 Titanic Movie
Titanic may have warned our century of the pitfalls of unfounded arrogance and faith in nearly everything, but it did not discourage the human penchant for exploration, innovation and creativity.
As Titanic slipped beneath the sea, those in the lifeboats heard the cries of the remaining survivors.
The Titanic sinking remains a compelling story, though, capturing our imaginations and reminding us of how, on the night of April 14, 1912, one world passed into history as another was being born.

JOM Article on The Titanic: Did a Metallurgical Failure Cause a Night to Remember?
The construction of the Titanic was delayed due to an accident involving the Olympic.
Whereas the 1953 movie used a 8.5 m model of the ship, the 1997 movie recreated a nearly full size, 236 m long exterior set of the Titanic standing nearly 14 m tall from the water line to the boat deck floor, with its four funnels towering another 16 m.
(A still from the movie appears on the cover of this issue.) The first-class dining saloon and three-story grand staircase were constructed on a hydraulic platform at the bottom of the 9 m interior tank designed to be angled and flooded with 19 million liters of filtered seawater drawn from the ocean.

The ill-fated luxury liner Titanic departs Southampton, England, prior to her maiden Atlantic voyage and disastrous encounter with an iceberg off Newfoundland.
The results of the first ultrasonic scan of the front of the Titanic, much of which is buried in mud, showed that a series of six short slits was the only damage inflicted on the ship by the iceberg, and not, as has always been thought, a gaping 91 m/300 ft gash.
The total area of openings was found to be only about 1.1 or 1.2 sq m/12 or 13 sq ft. The unexpected discovery, which emerged from an expedition to the seabed by a team of scientists and engineers in August 1996, will force a re-writing of the countless histories of the disaster.

I went there with my father the other day, and while I knew that the museum had a large Titanic model, I didn't know that it was *the* model from the movie.
I actually didn't find out until after I left the museum that the model was from the movie (oddly enough I didn't put 2 and 2 together when I saw the giant movie poster behind it, or when the little brochure said "for the 1953 movie").
I heard after the movie was finished, the smaller model was detailed and put on display at an amusement park in New Zealand.

 Titanic Movie Review
The story of the Titanic is rife of irony and juxtaposition, and Cameron artfully peppers his script with these two aspects.
Cameron fixates on these two characters, and it is their story, not the sinking of the ship, that is at the forefront of "Titanic"-- he has always put the relationships of his characters in the foreground, such as the Ripley-Newt relationship in "Aliens", or the Bud-Lindsey reconciliation in "The Abyss".
Whether it is the spectacular visualization of the Titanic's final death throes or something as minor as the icy breath of the shivering survivors, this film is a testament to how technology can contribute to dramatic storytelling.

The 1953 Titanic stands nonetheless as a fair enough entry into the mini-genre of Titanic-based films.

Even though "Saved from the Titanic" was released on May 14, 1912, barely a month after the White Star liner met her doom, it was light years away from the promotional films hyping the unsinkable ship prior to her maiden voyage.
In many ways, the story behind the movie completed by Werner Klingler seems more interesting than the fake story onscreen unless you realize that this artistically terrible film is a reflection of the false system under which it was made.
"Titanic" 1943, unlike the American-made "Titanics" in 1953 and 1997 and the British "Night To Remember" (probably the best of all the versions), is liitle-seen or remembered today and is discussed, if at all, only in a political context.
