That miniseries was more effective as a look into the workings of a transatlantic liner in the early 20th century than about the Titanic specifically.
Granted, the sets for SOS Titanic could use a little work and I was never once convinced that for the large scale shots I wasn't looking at the Queen Mary, but overall I thought it a standup piece of work.
The worst Titanic movie, sorry to say for those who feel otherwise, is Cameron's by a mile with me. No amount of accurate sets and impressive SFX can ever compensate for the worst written script ever, not to mention insufferably annoying characters and performances from all the leads.

In the next 18 months, he'll produce a TV miniseries and an IMAX film, both depicting the first small steps humankind takes on Mars.

With that in mind, Cameron shared the basics of the mission architecture both the IMAX film and the miniseries will share, teasing his Mars-hungry audience with numerous design sketches of the vehicles that the films will bring to life.

The 1996 Hallmark miniseries of TITANIC was unfortunate in that it ended up being largely overshadowed by James Cameron's 1997 big-screen blockbuster (by the time the miniseries was aired in the UK and Australia, James Cameron's version had well and truly exploded onto the scene).
No version of TITANIC would be complete without the ebullient and "unsinkable" Molly Brown (Marilu Henner plays her with enough spirit and spunk to make Debbie Reynolds proud and Kathy Bates pale).

Tv movies CAN be good but most of the time (like in this case) they're terribly concocted crap that has really nothing to do with the storyline whatsoever.
But obviously fictional characters are created to add more drama to the movie....I do admit that Cameron did go a little overboard but he still included some fundamental people in the movie.

I think I read somewhere that the original script for the miniseries contained a different love story and all of the historical passengers and it was historically accurate but then it was re-polished or something...
(sarcasum) the original miniseries script was repolised because one of the writers (a female) didn't like it so she repolished the script adding the rape scene, the whole robbing passengers theme ect.
It involved the goodwin family, the new york incident, a different love story, benjamin guggenhiem and madam aubert, the astors, the strauses, the planning of the Titanic and olympic in the downshire house, the californian incident before and during the sinking all completely accurate than the one (which i had to admit) that really sucked.

From the 1953 20th Century Fox film of Titanic that starred Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck we have Sol Kaplan's music which begins in heroic mould suggesting the majesty and arrogance of early 20th Century technology only to be cut short by dissonances leading into more tragic figures.
Alwyn's multi-tiered Main Title music vividly evokes the depths and the roll and swell of the waves in its lower string ostinatos while stiff-upper lip British valour and steadfastness and then the ultimate tragedy is suggested by the rest of the orchestra; while the film's Epilogue is a moving elegy.
