Titian Ramsay Peale (born November 2, 1799; died March 13, 1885) was a noted American artist, naturalist, entomologist and photographer.
Peale was first exposed to the study of natural history while assisting his father on his many excursions in search of specimens for the Peale Museum.
Peale took part in the 1817 expedition of the Academy of Natural Sciences to Florida and Georgia, together with Thomas Say, George Ord and William Maclure.

The youngest son of Charles Willson Peale was born in Philosophical Hall in November 1799 and given the name Titian Ramsay Peale, after a brother who had died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1798.
Educated primarily at home, the young Titian Peale took advantage of his family connections to meet some of America's most prominent naturalists and to attend Caspar Wistar's lectures in anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania.
Peale executed several drawings of new American birds for Charles Lucien Bonaparte's supplement to Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology (Philadelphia, 1825-1833), and was hired by Say to prepare 54 colored plates for a three-volume American Entomology (Philadelphia: Philadelphia Museum, 1824-1828).

Peale served as a captain of volunteers in the Revolution, painting, when he could, portraits of military leaders.
In 1779 Peale was elected to the Pennsylvania legislature and was politically active for several years.

Titian Peale, then 19, was of slight build and stood between 5’8" and 5’9" tall - thus the coat reached about halfway between his crouch and knees.
Peale’s, his moccasins, tailored buckskin underwear, a pair of pistols and other memorabilia from the expedition will soon be available for public viewing at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, National Park Service, St. Louis, Missouri (under the arch).

Peale arrived at Mount Shasta as part of the Emmons overland exploration sent by Wilkes, in September and October of 1841.
Peale was relieved from the project, for Wilkes and others thought that Peale had botched the book by improper scientific descriptions.
Peale, however, had a long standing feud with Wilkes, and years of bickering during and after the expedition may have had a lot to do with Peale's being relieved from the project.

Titian’s birth in the Hall of the American Philosophical Society, the family’s living quarters and home of his father’s world-famous Philadelphia Museum, destined him for achievement in both art and science.
In 1833, Titian was elected to the American Philosophical Society, indicative of his stature in American scientific circles, and became acting manager of the Philadelphia Museum.
Although Titian was later to have difficulty in publishing his account of the voyage, his contributions as a naturalist were prodigious: 2,150 birds, 134 mammals, and 588 species of fish.

Explorer-naturalist Titian Ramsey Peale II, a son of the artist, petitioned the Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents in 1870, claiming ownership of the painting on behalf of his father’s heirs.
Peale visited both Trenton and Princeton to observe and sketch the landscape in preparation for the painting, and he obviously had vivid memories of the Battle at Princeton.
In Peale’s painting, Washington is strongly silhouetted against a pinkish-blue sky, with the horizon line at the mid-level of the canvas.
