Titlow is a nice, easy, gradual slope with nothing to offer deeper than about 65 feet.

My buddy and I were bored of Sunny Side Beach; don't get me wrong as it is a great place to hang out, but we wanted something different.
I have been to Sunny Side Beach, Les Davis, and Delco Wall and I have to say when the current it not bad at Titlow Park, it is an awesome dive site for all levels of diving.

We met at Owens Beach on the north eastern side of Point Defiance in Tacoma at 8:45 AM, it was a little windy and cold but no rain, and none in the forecast.
After sitting on the beach in a spot of sun for awhile we realized that it was not likely anyone else was coming.
As we pulled up to the beach the couple there was getting into their double, they headed off slowly while we enjoyed our lunches in the cool wind.

That's the advice from state health and environmental officials who are collaborating on a first-time effort to monitor six dozen swimming beaches along Puget Sound and the Washington coast.
The beaches will be tested at least weekly this summer for bacterial pollution that could make people sick, with the results made available on the Internet at www.doh.wa.gov/beach.
The Washington departments of Ecology and Health originally planned to monitor 60 beaches, but instead will be able to track 72 beaches, thanks to volunteers stepping forward to supplement the monitoring effort.

The Beach Tavern opened its doors six months after prohibition was ended in 1934 and has been open ever since.

An old ferry terminal was once at home here, although nothing remains of it now but the bottle field of wood columns that acted as the support beams of the dock.

The martin was gliding with a group of gulls, making a few flapping wing beats and then circling and chirping, but never descending to give us a close up view of the brilliant fl and purple hues along its back that gives the species its common name.
I have been visiting Titlow Beach each day this week, with the exception of yesterday, in an effort to document when the first martins would arrive on their long journey north from South America.
Last year we made our first Purple Martin sighting at Titlow Beach on April 21, and so, like many other species sightings this year, the martins are back nearly two weeks ahead of last year, making one of their earliest appearances ever.

There are showers (for rinsing) although they are only functional in the summer.
Titlow is a very current intensive site, so be very wary of diving it during any significant tidal exchange.

Of course, by the time I rushed into the living room and grabbed my binoculars the bird was gone, but I caught a glimpse of yellow on an azalea in the neighbor's yard and had a fleeting view of the first Orange-crowned Warbler in our yard this year.
Mostly they just rode out the cold and gusting breeze as they sat on power lines that overlook the piling that holds 20 nest boxes, but they did make one fly by of the boxes before returning to their perch on the power lines.
We meant to just spend a few minutes at Titlow but with the low tide we couldn't resist taking some photos and wandering to the edge of the water to get a new perspective on the number of rotting piling off the shore here where boats once landed.

The Tacoma Narrows is known to have a strong current but Titlow Beach is protected fairly well due to the back eddy, making it an excellent spot to introduce beginner and intermediate divers to coldwater diving.
An old pier hanging off the shoreline is home to a great deal of marine life, as well as the ledge just beyond the south end of the structure.
The nooks and crannies of Titlow Beach can be home to the giant Pacific octopus.

Last time I was out there we found a couple of octopus and a wolf eel, among all the other species that you'll typically see at Titlow.
Now, I am excited about finally diving Titlow but expect me to be bitchy because I am in a wetsuit.

TACOMA - During daylight hours next Wednesday and Thursday, July 28 and 29, crews working for design-builder Tacoma Narrows Constructors (TNC) will remove 16 creosote pilings from the Titlow Beach area in Tacoma.
Removing the pilings is a requirement of a Hydraulic Project Approval permit issued to WSDOT by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife as part of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge project.
