  Tiverton (town), Rhode Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tiverton controlled the area known as East Freetown, Massachusetts as an outpost until 1747 when it was purchased by Freetown.
Tiverton was originally incorporated in 1694, as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
A long boundary dispute between Rhode Island and Massachusetts was settled in 1746, and Tiverton, by Royal Decree, together with the Towns of Cumberland, Barrington, Bristol and Little Compton was annexed to Rhode Island.

Tiverton stopped in the possession of the Courtenays till Henry VIII slew the head of their house and confiscated their lands in 1539.
They allowed the hinder parts of the castle fall into decay and lived in the gatehouse and the adjacent front, which were rescued from agricultural uses and made into a residential tenement.
An engraving in Dunsford's 'History of Tiverton' shows that, in 1780, there was more surviving of the hall and the second angle-tower than is now visible.
