Tiye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tjuyu, Tiye’s mother, was a descendant of Ahmose-Nefertari, and it has been suggested that her father, Yuya, may have been of Asiatic descent, but his ethnicity is uncertain.
If Tiye's year of death was year 12 of Akhenaten's reign (1338 BC), this would place her birth around 1398 BC, her marriage to Amenhotep III at the age of eleven or twelve and her becoming a widow at the age of forty-eight to forty-nine years old.
Tiye is believed to have been buried in Akhenaten's royal tomb at Amarna alongside her son and granddaughter Meketaten, as a fragment from the tomb was not long ago identified as being from her sarcophagus.

 Queen Tiye: A Biography
Tiye, the beautiful Chief Queen of Amenhotep III and mother of Akhenaten, was the matriarch of the Amarna family.
Tiye's mother, Thuya, was Superintendent of the Harem of Min of Akhmim and of Amun of Thebes during the reign of Thutmose IV, and was probably a descendant of Ahmose Nefertari, the first queen of the 18th dynasty.
Tiye continued to be a major political influence during the reign of her second son, Amenhotep IV, again made clear by the letters exchanged with king Tushratta of Mitanni.

Tiye held the title of "God's Wife," and in a practical sense this meant that she was wife of all the living gods of the royal house.
Tiye, as the "incarnation of Isis/Astarte," upheld the rule of Akhenaten as the "incarnation" of Re in Egypt, and that of Aye in Phoenicia and Israel as the "incarnation" of Seth-Baal.
Tiye changed her mind and accepted the plan of Aye to depose Akhenaten and place another one of her sons on the throne.

 Queen Tiye
Tiye's parents were buried in the Valley of the Kings (as many nobles were) and their tomb was found intact in 1904, although not as grand as a Royal tomb it still held many treasures - including the mummies of both Yuya and Thuya.
Tiye was frequently mentioned, or shown beside Amenhotep in sculptures, reliefs and inscriptions from the period, it is assumed that Tiye did have a strong effect on the state affairs of Egypt before and indeed after Amenhotep's death.
Tiye's body was then moved again to her husband's tomb to rest for eternity with him, however, when the priests discovered the tomb had been robbed both the bodies of Amenhotep III and Tiye were moved to a safer location, the tomb of Amenhotep II.

Tiye seems to have married Amenhotep III during year 2 of his reign (1385 BC) and they had at least six children, one of whom, Akhenaton, went on to become pharaoh (he married Nefertiti).

In the tense climate that prevailed, Tiye arranged a compromise by persuading her son to leave Thebes and establish a new capital at Amarna in Middle Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile.

According to Sabri Abdel-Aziz, head of the SCA's Ancient Egypt Department, the inscriptions written on the statue also include a cartouche of a 21st Dynasty queen called Henutaw, which reveals that the same statue was used in a subsequent era.

According to ancient Egyptian religious practice a queen would not have been buried at the same time as a Pharaoh, and once a monarch for whom the tomb was built was duly buried no one could ever reopen the tomb.
But Queen Tiye evidently died during the reign of her son Akhenaten, who provided her with gilded shrine (found in KV55) and a red granite sarcophagus of which a fragment was found in a royal tomb at Tel Al-Amarna.

Born in Nubia, Queen Tiye was the Great Royal Wife of Amenhotep III, mother of Amenhotep IV (later known as Akenhaton), and mother-in-law of Nefertiti.
This is supported by the fact that a hair sample from the mummy matched a lock of hair found in Tutankhamen's (her reputed son/grandson) tomb.
However, these findings are disputed primarily on the grounds that the mummy was much "younger" than Queen Tiye would have been when she died.
