Great excursions from Tizi Ouzou includes a trip out to the Shrine of Sidi Beloua, 20 km to the north,- a nice structure, and offers a great view over the mountainous agricultural area.

At a polling station set up in a primary school in the middle of one of Tizi Ouzou's many council estates, the police were trying to drive demonstrators away using tear gas.
Villages outside Tizi Ouzou have also been cut off from the rest of the region, and tree trunks and stones have been place across the roads.

Police fired tear gas and used water cannon to disperse a demonstration in the main town Tizi Ouzou, where Mr Bouteflika was holding a rally.
Berber militants had called for demonstrations and a strike to coincide with Mr Bouteflika's first visit to Tizi Ouzou since riots in 2001, which left more than 100 people dead.
President Bouteflika is viewed as favourite to win the elections against the former prime minister and ally, Ali Benfliss, and Islamic contender Djab Allah.

After a week of campaigning for the April 8 election, many of the towns, villages, and even the main city, Tizi Ouzou, in Kabylie, home to Algeria's large Berber minority, were bedecked in campaign posters and hand-painted slogans.
