Abstract: On the etymology and migration from the Middle East to Italy of a full-length robe or overcoat described in Cesare Vecellio's Habiti antichi et moderni di tutto il mondo (1590).
Finds that the garment (called "caftan" by the Ottomans, "granatza" or "kabbadion" by the Pseudo-Kodinos, and "guarnaccia" by Vecellio, who says it was worn by "modern Neapolitan matrons") was found among peoples who had contact either with the Ottomans or Byzantines, and that the latter used it (14th c.) as a courtly ceremonial garment.
Vecellio, who was a friend of Odorico Piloni, completed his Habiti antichi et moderni di tutto il mondo in Piloni's villa.

There were artists in two branches, one descended from Conte Vecellio, a notary who served as the town mayor, military leader and ambassador to Venice, and one from his brother Giovanni Antonio Vecellio (d 1497).
He was joined there by his younger brother Tiziano Vecellio (see TITIAN), who became the leading painter in Venice and one of the most important artists in Italy in the 16th century.
(4) Marco Vecellio, the son of Titian’s second cousin, was a mediocre follower of the master’s style, as was Marco’s son Tiziano Vecellio, or ‘Tizianello’ (1570–1650), who wrote a biography of Titian (La vita del insigne Tiziano Vecellio, 1622).

Sito Ufficiale Galleria Borghese - Tiziano Vecellio - Amor Sacro e Amor Profano   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
