The municipality of Tlacotalpan is located in the eastern coastal region of the Mexican state of Veracruz, at 18°37′ N 95°40′ W.
Tlacotalpan borders with the municipalities of Alvarado to the north; José Azueta, Isla, and Santiago Tuxtla to the south; Lerdo de Tejada, Saltabarranca, and Santiago Tuxtla to the east; and Acula and Amatitlán to the west.
The municipal seat, the town of Tlacotalpan, was founded as a river port on the banks of the Papaloapan in the mid-16th century.

Tlacotalpan actually means "half land" in Náhuatl (pronounced "nah-wat" the letter "L" is silent) and the area surrounding it was first spied by those dreaded Spanish conquistadors in 1518.
The residents of Tlacotalpan ("Tlacotalpeños") have deep roots stretching from Spanish Creoles, Cubanos, and the Mexican Mestizo (mix of Native and Spanish).
Tlacotalpan is still an important fishing port and you can stroll along the waterfront beside the Papaloapan river or venture off into the town plaza called "Zarragoza Park".

Known as “El Músico Poeta” (“The Musical Poet”), and considered to be one of Mexico’s most important songwriters in the pre-World War II era, Agustín Lara was born October 30, 1897, in Mexico City, although later in life, Lara claimed Tlacotalpan, on the banks of the Papolapan River south of Veracruz, as his birthplace.
There are several statues erected in his honor in Tlacotalpan.

Multicolored Tlacotalpan town reminded me of a Mexican "Umbrellas of Cherbourg." It was a dazzle of brilliance just washed by the recent downpour, and it gleamed in the sun even while a light rain continued its soft fall to earth.
It was raining as the Grand Marquis left the main road south of Veracruz, turned east and drove the last 12 kilometers to Tlacotalpan.
It was hard to go inside, but we wished to visit the museum of Tlacotalpan's famous son, the composer, Agustin Lara.

The somewhat wide residential streets that emanate from the main zocaló are lined with mostly single-story homes painted in very intense, colorful shades of pink, purple, lime green, blue, yellow, and a few other colors not usually seen in neighborhoods where children live.

Over the past six years the last weeks of September and the first two weeks of October I travel to the northwest of the Port of Veracruz to Cardel/Chichicaxtle and Paso de Ovejas to observe the raptor migrations.
This year I decided to stay put here in Tlacotalpan and surrounding areas (55 miles to the south of Veracruz) and see if I could sort out the hawk migration as it passes through the vast tropical wetlands of central Veracruz.
Well, thats it for the moment, I hope that I was able to communicate adequeately some of the hawkwatch from Tlacotalpan.
