Drought and Low-N Conference: TRIAZOLE PRIMING OF MAIZE SEED TO ENHANCE DROUGHT TOLERANCE DURING FIELD ESTABLISHMENT
We evaluated the triazole ‘Paclobutrazol’ as a seed primer on two maize cultivars in 1994 and on five maize cultivars in 1995 in field trials conducted at Tlaltizapan, Morelos and at Cocula, Guerrero, and in greenhouse studies at the University of Guelph.
In the 1994 trial series, seeds of hybrids ‘P 3288’ and ‘NK TB 8101’ were primed with Paclobutrazol 50 alone and in combination with Ancymidol 25, and grown under severe and moderate drought stress conditions in the dry winter season.
The two field trials at Tlaltizapan involved a seedling survival trial with a gradation in levels of irrigation during the establishment phase and a mid-season drought stress trial.

Combining ability of different versions of Tuxpeño-based maize germplasm developed at CIMMYT
In this study, nine different Tuxpeño versions developed at CIMMYT were compared for their combining ability using four testers (two from Tuxpeño and two from ETO Blanco).
Thirty-six line x tester crosses and 13 parents were evaluated in two environments at Poza Rica and Tlaltizapan, México during 1991.
The improved cross performance of the two hybrid-oriented Tuxpeño versions was due to an increase in their ear length and 100 kernel weight.

 AWN Vol 43: awn43b7.html
For the ALs using data averaged across both sowing dates in Tlaltizapan, the high CTD lines had an average yield of 5.2 T/ha in comparison to 4.7 T/ha for the low CTD group, representing a difference of 0.5 C in average CTD.
Cluster analysis for the advanced lines confirmed Tlaltizapan to be the best site in Mexico for predicting yields in most of the wheat regions studied, with the notable exception of central and peninsular India.
Because temperatures are similar between Tlaltizapan and late sowing in northwest Mexico, differences in genotypic ranking may be related to photoperiod effects associated with sowing times.

Tour By Mexico ® - Tlaltizapan in Morelos State, Mexico
ta, chose Tlaltizapan as the place to establish the headquarters of the Liberating Army of the South.
During his stay, he built the atrium of the mid XVI century Dominican church; a great mausoleum with several crypts to bury Zapatista leaders, but by chance, these were occupied by Generals Octaviano Muñoz, Adrián Huicochea, Ignacio and Alberto Maya, Bonifacio García, Amador Salazar, Emigdio Marmolejo and Pioquinto Galis.

Prospects of Using ABA in Selection for Drought Tolerance in Cereal Crops
The same populations as used for the seedling study above was evaluated for indirect response of ABA to selection for drought tolerance at flowering and grain filling stage (Mugo, 1999).
Trials were grown under managed severe drought stress and well-watered field conditions at Tlaltizapan, Mexico, and pre-and post-floweering leaf ABA was measssured.
The entries were evaluated under post-emergence drought stress at Tlaltizapan, Mexico in 1994/95.

PAG-X: QUANTITATIVE TRAIT LOCI FOR PHOTOPERIOD RESPONSE IN MAIZE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The number of days from planting to anthesis (AD) and photoperiod response (PPR), measured as the difference between long and short-day flowering time divided by short-day flowering time, were studied to assess photoperiod sensitivity in 236 F3 lines derived from a cross between photoperiod-sensitive inbred CML9 and photoperiod-insensitive inbred A632Ht.
The F3 lines were evaluated under long and short-days at Tlaltizapan, Mexico and Ames, Iowa.
QTL analysis was conducted for each photoperiod using combined and individual environments.

 Our Mexico -- Following Zapata
We traveled to Chinameca where the archway with bullet nicks stands and a bronze Zapata mounted on his horse, raising his arm in a noble expression of victory, or perhaps defiance, marks the place of his death.
I had missed an opportunity, and now on the return from Tlaltizapan, heading for the Hacienda San Pedro Apalaco where Zapata first worked and gained fame as a charro, José Luis and I got lost.
Lost, dusk coming, this dirt, and rutted road, lined with crops, led to a low area where a puddle completely blocked the way.

 AWN Vol 42
The project leader, J.S. Quick, spent most of 1995 on sabbatical leave at CIMMYT in Mexico, and conducted research on heat tolerance in wheat with Drs.
Three field tests for heat tolerance were evaluated at Tlaltizapan and Ciudad Obregon using canopy temperature depression, stomatal conductance, and leaf chlorosis.
Canopy temperature depression has considerable promise, but because it is greatly affected by air movement, may have limited value in Colorado.

While at CIMMYT we were exposed to the extraordinary genetic diversity of maize and wheat while learning about some of the challenges that face those who develop genetically improved plants for the developing world.
While visiting CIMMYT, our group experienced Mexico on trips to the nearby pyramids at Teotihuacan, CIMMYT’s Tlaltizapan subtropical field station, and the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
En route to CIMMYT, the group visited the National Center for Genome Resources in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
