Twilight Zone was the beginning of speculative fiction on tv(which, this may come as a surprise to you, but was still pretty new back then.) Twilight Zone may have faltered a few times, but it broke new ground and without it, many other shows(incluing American Gothic) never would have been given a chance.
The Twilight Zone is an American classic, and I don't know if it ever jumped the shark, it came close with the video taped episodes and the hour long shows seemed too long for the TZ format.
I think twilight zone started its extremely dissapointing decline when the geniuses at the network decided to extend the show to a full hour...the writers had to come up with even more complex ideas and stories to hold the viewers' interest.
