Riverworld - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are no people from a time later than the early 21st century, ostensibly because an accident in space wiped out the human race at that time.
Everyone has the same body that they possessed at the age of twenty-five, except in perfect health, and further aging does not seem to occur.
In each location, there are initially three groups of people: a large group from one time period and place, a smaller group from another time and place, and a very small group of people from random times and places.

Finally these bodies — tumbled about in the confusion of war, already buried once or several times, pawed over by foraging humans or beasts, unearthed again and ticketed — rejoined their ranks to lie in the deceptively calm order prepared for them.
Imagine yourself as a member of the detail removing 3354 bodies from hastily dug battlefield graves to the new cemetery (this is over a thousand more bodies than the entire 1863 civilian population of Gettysburg).

Let's take a look at such extrapolating; and To Your Scattered Bodies Go, the first of a series of stories, might be an appropriate subject, having won a "Hugo" as the most popular SF novel of 1971 among American fans.
Or so at least the hero is told in the end, which may or may not be a lie (it seems likely that it is only a cruel joke of the "gods" to further torment the characters of the story).
This world is truly hell, and they are punished if they so much as utter the word; insult is added to injury in that they are required to exclaim that they positively like their toiling and that things couldn't be better.
