Beastie Boys : To the 5 Boroughs - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Now that Ad-Rock, MCA, and Mike D are all nearly 40, they're not as interested in being the world's hippest group, as evidenced by their abandonment of their Grand Royal empire at the turn of the decade, and that suspicion is borne out by To the 5 Boroughs.
Like many musicians at middle age, the Beasties are a little set in their ways, ignoring modern music nearly entirely and turning to the music of their youth for sustenance.
That's a subtle achievement, something that will likely not please those listeners looking for the shock of the new from a Beastie Boys record, but judged on its own musical merits, To the 5 Boroughs is a satisfying listen, and convincing evidence that the trio will be able to weather middle age well.

To the 5 Boroughs - Beastie Boys - Music Reviews
The significance of 'To The 5 Boroughs' is its integrity and defiance; yeah, there are some block party-esque moments and some track that wouldn’t sound out of place from films such as Beat Street, but essentially it’s a record by a trio of late thirtysomethings who portray who they are through their art, without compromise.
To the 5 Boroughs is continuously distracted from its titular dedication by political concerns, severely dampening not only its replay factor but also proving to be the least fun album the normally surefire trio has made.
Their sixth album ‘To The Five Boroughs’ is straight out hip hop with DJ Mix Master Mike truly launching his skills into another stratosphere.

To the 5 Boroughs, the Beastie Boys' first LP in six years, is a thunderous return to form.
To the 5 Boroughs captures the sound of the Beasties in their prime, spitting invective (as on the Bush-baiting "That's It That's All") over urgent bass-driven cuts with fortysomething voices that are as fresh as ever.
Their boundary pushing stuff is cool, but To The 5 Boroughs is a straight-up N.Y. oldschool hiphop gem with a 2004 touch.

To The 5 Boroughs is the Beastie Boys' sixth studio album.
To the 5 Boroughs has two main themes - a tribute to their home town New York after the September 11 terrorist attacks (although, notably, the Twin Towers are on the cover drawing) and a criticism of George W. Bush's Presidency.
Rolling Stone Magazine said "To the 5 Boroughs is an exciting, astonishing balancing act: fast, funny and sobering".

Borough (New York City) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In New York City, a borough is a unique form of government used to administer the five constituent counties that make up the city; it differs significantly from other borough forms of government used in other parts of the Tri-State Region and elsewhere in the United States.
It is often used by politicians to counter a natural focus on Manhattan and to place all five boroughs on an equal standing.
Although each borough is represented by a borough president and (with the exception of Manhattan) has a borough hall, the borough president has minimal executive powers, and there is no legislative function within a borough.

And We Danced - Review of To the 5 Boroughs by the Beastie Boys
The album is traditional in sound - the trademark interplay of verses dropped by the gravelly voice of MCA and sharper tones of compatriots Mike D and AdRock is delivered on top of rhythm tracks enhanced with wide ranging samples from the Partridge Family to Public Enemy.
Much has been made of To the 5 Boroughs' swipes at the current occupant of the White House.

Slant Magazine - Music Review: Beastie Boys: To The 5 Boroughs
It's the Beasties Boys' To The 5 Boroughs, which, despite politics playing a major force in only a handful of the album's 15 tracks, basically comes off as the Rock the Vote commercial you have to pay for only to have anti-piracy filters ensure unplayability in half the nation's computers.
But To The 5 Boroughs is their first long-player that will be impossible to look back upon without immediately reflecting upon its overt political sound bites.

Although To the 5 Boroughs was produced by the three members of the Beastie Boys, it sounds a lot like the production work of Rick Rubin circa 1985.
There are plenty of progressive political sentiments throughout the record, as well, and many of them are directed at President Bush, which gives To the 5 Boroughs about a 50-50 shot at being at total obsolescence come November.

IGN: To The 5 Boroughs Review
Thankfully teir latest album, To the 5 Boroughs, continues in their estimable trailblazing tradition, and creates yet another singular musical experience for its listener, whether he or she jumped on the bandwagon in 1987 or have only recently discovered them.
Rather than incorporating the sum total of their experiences kitchen-sink style into a collection rife with the eclecticism of past releases, this time around the Boys make a dramatic turn with their new record and redefine themselves even as they remind us of the worlds they've already conquered.
On To the 5 Boroughs, however, the Beasties have rediscovered their inner b-boys, forsaking much of the experimentation of Hello Nasty and its predecessors for a streamlined, imminently more compelling sound that will surely keep dance floors afire even as it inspires more than a few consciousnesses to expand themselves.

With its Nice & Smooth impersonations and shout outs to Brooklyn's Albee Square Mall, To the 5 Boroughs, their first album in six years, harkens the return of the trio to the city that made them who they are today.
It's an up-tempo yet surprisingly homogenous assemblage of vintage electro-style party beats, and it's a strictly Beastie affair: the Boys co-wrote and produced each track themselves, which means that it sports none of the sonic fripperies and quirky collaborations that distinguished previous classics such as Paul's Boutique.
To The Five Boroughs is a triumphant return for the Beastie Boys and even though it was six years in the making, it was worth the wait.

‘To the 5 Boroughs’ is the B-Boy’s fifth long player release, written in response to September 11th and their country’s currently overly aggressive foreign policy.
The politicised material on this album is certainly spot on and if you like the B-Boys then you will no doubt be taking knowing side glances at your mates as if to say “brother, that shit is true”.
So, intelligent they may be, sympathetic to the plights of their fellow nations they certainly are, but the clear and simple reason Beastie Boys are here with us today is to write, and in this case, produce some seriously hot shit.
