As the game opens, you find yourself as a new recruit in the castle of Avalon, where the humans are making their final stand against the Sha'ahoul.
Usually, if a role-playing game has much of a plot at all, it has you seeking out enemies and essentially laying siege to them, so the role reversal here is a nice change of pace.
Now, if you're going to emulate a couple games, then Diablo and Baldur's Gate are good choices, and Digital Tome was able to take the simple, action-oriented parts of Diablo and combine them with the depth and storytelling of Baldur's Gate.

A game will usually provide a "save game" feature, but this is only intended to allow splitting a game across multiple sessions, and the save file will be deleted automatically when the character dies.
The game may provide a "wizard mode" which allows exploring the dungeon without risk of death, but again it is not possible to win honourably using such a mechanism.

Discussions of games vary from analyses of the “cultural rhetoric” particular games suggest (for example, The Landlord’s Game, a progenitor of Monopoly), to discussions about chance and probability of dice and onwards to examinations of archetypal digital games, such as Breakout and Tetris.
It refers to actions and outcomes within a magic circle that add to the emotional and psychological experience of playing the game: when the actions that the game system affords the player seem enticing and make sense in pursuing the goal(s) of the game, the first threshold of meaningful play is crossed.
Therefore, it is recommended reading for both students of game theory and game designers who are willing to expand their thinking “outside the box,” and to understand games as “trans-medial” entities, a term Jesper Juul has used to describe games’ tendency to shift between different media and technologies.

The Gamer’s Tome works vaguely by splitting sections into months instead of chapters and revisiting the highlights of that month, for example E3 is discussed in the May segment, and the bulk of 360 games in the Holiday segment.
The Tome is ultimately a collection of short essays on a variety of gaming topics trying as best it can to find a suitable structure, and to get too caught up in the seeming randomness of that structure is to lose sight of the forest through the trees.
The Gamer’s Tome may be described as a niche product, but it is written by someone deeply connected to that niche, and like minded gamers will be missing out by not picking it up.
