Toaplan also released a year later a revised special version of Batsugun that is more manic than the original, with a whole host of extra features, inc extra game loops, more intricate scoring/experience mechanism, a one hit force field, more powerful bombs and an arranged soundtrack.
Toaplan certainly reached their peak, graphically, with Batsugun, creating one of the most hateful bosses that have been encountered.
With Toaplans final game the company saw fit to release not only their best shooter to date, but also a title that spawned a whole new sub genre of shooting game.

In the spirit of Toaplan shooters from the 80's and early 90's Outzone is one tough cookie of a game.
At that time, a message was posted to U.N. The message said that there were excellent cyborg soldiers who undertake battle with money in the remote region, so-called "Out Zone", of the galaxy system.
Your task is to take command of one of two cyborg marines sent in to eradicate all the marauding alien scum from their homeworld - a region called the 'Outzone' - through 7 long and extremely challenging levels - complete with a full compliment of very tricky to defeat end-of-stage guardians.

Toaplan was the famed Japanese developer that probably did more to advance the vehicle shooter genre than anyone.
Toaplan shooters cannot be easier to grasp – shoot or be shot – but they require a skillful combination of reflexes and memorization that punishes the casual.
There are a string of classics created by Toaplan from 1986’s Slap Fight to 1993's Batsugun, each brilliant and somehow unique in its own way.

Often in Manic shooters the collision zone of the player craft is greatly reduced, sometimes to as little as one pixel, to allow the players to maneuver through small gaps in the waves of bullets that can sometimes cover the entire screen.
Many ex-employees of Batsugun's now defunct developer Toaplan went on to work for Japanese game developer Cave, who are well-known as one of the leading creators of Manic shooters.

Another excellent theme is "Blue Illumination", a slow-paced song that plays during the ending credits and really gives a sense of melancholy (after all, they're the ending credits of the last Toaplan shmup...damn,a sec, i need to wipe off the tears!).Now, the special version has the same BGM,but the Saturn port...
The Arcade versions have a decent, "old skool" BGM with a vaguely pop/rock style, which suits fine the game without being too memorable. The Saturn port has a rearranged version which is musically better and closer to "normal" music, but it sounds a bit muffled.
